Folks, my bike is approaching the dreaded 12k service. I'm reasonably able (mechanics wise) and think I can handle everything required at this service with the exception of valve clearances and throttle body balance. I know that the expense of these particular procedures means they're often omitted from the service. Any idea how much the clearances & balance will cost at a dealers? Thanks.

Hi Paul the throttle body balance and the valve check both require the tank to come off so both are done at the same time.

They will both be easy jobs at only 12,000mls if you wanted to do them yourself? Is the bike still under warranty? If not DIY.

Download a free program called TuneECU for doing general electronic checks including throttle body balance.

    For valve checks see here:

And don't forget the suspension linkages. Most important they are done and very expensive if they need to be refurbished.

I just had the phone call on my bike that has had its valve clearances checked
    3 hours labour
    Cam cover seal
    Ladder seals x 3
    Ladder screws x6
    consumables

    Total £298.64 inc VAT
Works out at £62+ (£75inc VAT) per hour just for the labour

Done by my Triumph dealer but happy for them to do this as I just dont have the ability and the bike would be unridable for a week should something go wrong (screw falling inside the engine)
Anyhow, all clearances are as good as new so at 32,000 miles on a 10' plate I am happy

Oh, I need a new rectifier....so another £115 for an aftermarket part

Tis all money but as I use mine for my 300 mile a week commute I needthe bike in tip top condition.
All other servicing I do myself

Sounds like most Triumph dealer charge almost the same rate. Mine here in Dorset is £62.50 an hour

Thanks for the responses guys (gals?). One thing that strikes me - and this is by no means Triumph specific - labour costs are mental! Aren't they. Whilst i appreciate dealers have significant overheads, £60 an hour equates to a £2400 per week or £100,000+ pa. Not a bad return for a 2nd year apprentice spannering on your bike!!

    Littleade,

Thanks for the recommendation. Unfortunately (and I know you were on your phone and consequently wouldnt have known) I live accross the Irish Sea. However, given dealer's costs, it might be financially advantageous to put the bike on the boat and pay your mobile mechanic to carry out the work at the quayside of the Liverpool/Belfast ferry!!!!
