Thinking about the return of the warm weather next year already and wondering about Sat Nav.

If I was buying one I'd probably go for one of the Garmin Zumo range, the 395LM. However, I already have two TomTom Sat Navs, one in each car, plus a smart phone. All are fairly recent with up to date maps.

I was looking on fleabay and found a handlebar mounted waterproof case for either a Sat Nav of phone and this made me wonder about using one of my existing devices rather than buy another.

Has anyone got experience of the cases/holders that take a car Sat Nav and are they any good?

    Thanks.

I used my tom tom one in a waterproof case and it was ok. I found I couldn't change any functions with my gloves on but once set it was fine. It was easier to set it then put it in the case. I powered it direct from the battery with a cigarette socket located under the seat (inline fuse in the pos cable!) routing the cables under the tank towards the headstock. At the time I was using a rider to pillion intercom and had a cable that would plug in so I could get directions into my helmet but I've used it since without and found it's ok.

I use Givi satnav case n use my car tomtom sat25 . It works fine. I bought wiring kit from (buybits). it's weather proof connections n you get a switch to turn the power on n off to satnav to avoid unnecessary power draw when not in use. Givi cover is well made n reaps quality. I was thinking of investing in the proper tomtom rider but as I don't use my bike on a regular basis hence I couldn't justify the expense

    Cheers guys.

I was out and about a couple of weeks ago in the Peak district and I always like to meander round the back lanes but always vaguely in some direction or other. If a little unsure of which of the unmarked lanes to take to keep me moving the right direction I had to stop and get the phone out to look at the map.

And last week I had to go to Birmingham and came back home almost entirely on the B roads and again a Sat Nav would be a better than keep having to stop and check I was heading the right direction on the phone.

I think I shall try one or the covers and see how I get on.

Be aware of cheap covers because I had one n the screen rotates up n down. I didn't experience such problems with Givi cover :)

If you ride at night in the dark or during the day when it's doom and gloom cloudy then yes they are ok.......... other than that, car satnavs in plastic cases are shite.

I fitted this sat nav to my FJR in 2009 -

It's a car sat nav, I kept it on the bike for 4 years (40000 mls). I rode in all weathers both here and in Europe and couldn't drown the thing if I tried.

When I bought a new bike in 2013 I was given a 'motorbike specific' one as part of the deal so I ended up with a brand new Zumo so I decided to destroy the Nuvi with a proper soaking with a bucket of water.

It survived that too so I sold it on Gumtree for £15.

I would use your least preferred Tom Tom, stick it on a Ram Mount and away you go. At least you'll see the screen on sunny days. What's the worst that can happen ??

An interesting thought and the older of the two I have is prime candidate. If it dies I can get the Zumo and use on the bike and in the car!

    Definitely food for thought.

    Thanks Reggie.

I tried my old garmin nuvi in one of those handlebar mounted so called waterproof cases that zipped up, looked great till the sun ( remember that???) came out, couldnt see a thing.
I put the tomtom app on my fone and tried out the free 50 miles with it in my pocket,ok i couldnt see the map but the directions worked well and got me to the Lacon Childe School in Cleobury Mortimer the other month for the Borders Classic Bike Show and back. I have paid the 15 quid now for 12 months even tho I have a car tomtom for work, good for back up just in case too
