    Hello,

If everything goes to plan, testdrive etc., I'm buying a red 2000 t595/955i this weekend. The bike looks phenomenal for it's age and there is a full service history, a big plus if you ask me. The previous owner did a lot of maintenance himself and send me some pictures, also the notorious one with rust in the cooling system... It's my first Triumph and I've seen some stories on the net about rust in the cooling system being an issue, but none are conclusive.

    I have several questions:

    • why is there rust in the cooling system? is this t595/955i engine specific? is this a normal phenomenon?
    • can I use a cleaner, like this one: THERMOCURE Cooling System Rust Remover & Flush | CRC to flush all the rust out of the system? flushing it thoroughly with demi water afterwards?
    • maybe a good idea to use a decent premixed cooling solution with rust inhibitors?

Sure it is rust? The engine is mainly aluminium. I would flush it a couple of times with distilled water until it runs clear and then use a motorcycle specific coolant.

My first thought was oil/headgasket, but I understand from the owner that that's perfectly fine... The oil (change) seems OK also in this picture...

Googled a few things and it seems a common problem on 955's (the rust that is)...

What about the cylinder liners? AFAIK, some of the early triples had wet steel/iron liners which will obviously rust if coolant isn't kept up to spec. Also, what is a "motorcycle specific" coolant? I use Halfords Oat coolant in all my bikes and the car, a mix of cast iron and aluminium engines.
