ive a private plate on retention i'd like to put on the new bike, is it feasible to do this prior to me getting it so its the first plate on the bike does anyone know? if not i'll have to do it electronically once i have the new V5.

dont know if anyone else is interested but i saw a nice plate that might suit another owner for £250 on the dvla site T50 THR
would look nice on some black/silver show plates ;-)

I beleive the vehicle has to be registered before putting on a private plate, I know you can choose your plate when you buy the vehicle but it has to be age related. But you could get the private plate swapped on before you pick up the bike as long as you have registered the transfer and paid the fee. I could be wrong [IMG]

I tried to do similar after buying a cheap plate but the dealer told me the easiest way is for them to register the bike, wait to get the V5 which you receive in a matter of days then transfer your private plate which you can do electronically, a new V5 arrives a couple of days later. It was no agro tbh.

..... But If you have a retention certificate why can't the dealer register with your plate from new

Hi Chris, there is a member on here that has done a fair bit with personalised plates called "Dozers Dad". If you contact him he may well be able to advise you?

I had private plates put on my car when it was new before I picked it up from the dealer.

Yes you can, I did it, give the retention document to your dealer and he will sort it out and ride away on a brand new bike with your personal plate.

When you sell it DVLA allocate an age related plate.

    Chris

If you look at your retention document there are 2 sections I think where you allocate it, one is for allocating to a new vehicle, I gave the document to my dealer (Staffs Triumph) and they registered it as they do with all new bikes, as with everything it's all done on line, no need to go down local DVLA offices any more.

I bought the next consecutive number for my other bike and did that on line, it is real easy.

    Good luck

Got one for my Son, who is currently 8 years old, so now on my Thruxton and or future bikes until he gets his own. His name is Luis Howe... image.jpeg

One thing to be aware of is the dreaded admin fee your insurance company may charge you for amending your policy. Bennetts charged me £30, which I was a bit grumpy about as they don't routinely send you documents. They didn't use to charge either.

Yes I did genuinely have a think about that! Kind of going on the fact that reg plates are a good enough income stream for the Government to be kept going in one form or another that they will still be around in 2024. Hopefully. Although if Trump gets in we may have all perished in World War 3 circa 2019 so it won't matter anyway
