If any of you are considering a trip into the EU soonish, keep an eye on the exchange rate. We're currently a hair's breadth from a pound getting you 1.20 Euro. Not been this high for quite some time. Should compensate a bit for the roaming charges you'll get smacked with....
Despite promising not to before brexit joe, they changed their minds afterwards and have now started roaming charges again.
Roaming charges are only being re introduced on new contracts, so as long as you have not changed contract you should still be roaming free.
Is the loophole that at the end of your 2 or 3 years you move on to a 'new' rolling contract? If not, then all you have to worry about is being locked in to potentially unfavourable contract to keep roaming charges away. Either way, the customer loses eventually.
I suppose it depends on your contract. I have a sim only with virgin. It's a touch over £6 a month. I live in France and call the UK 2 or 3 times a week. No roaming charges.
I've got a sim-only contract with giffgaff, which uses the O2 network. I just checked and they don't charge extra for roaming in the EU and certain other places. That's all it says. Good news, anyway.
A bad news for you is a good news for me. I should come over to UK in February. Everything booked, but covid can hit anytime. Let's be optimistic.. let's plan some shopping
When I started going to France the exchange rate was @ 10 francs to the pound and when the euro came in, I think, it was about 1.6 euros to the pound. Shame it's not that now!
As far as the phone's concerned it looks like sim-only is the way to go to avoid roaming charges. To be honest, I'm not really sure why you would have anything else. Buy a phone (iPhone..no rubbish for me ) Sim-only (with Virgin). £6 month. No doubt some one will point out why this isn't a good idea.
The £ is looking better against the Dollar too. Useful as we are going on a cruise in the. Caribbean in March. Should have been going next week but the boat has covid. Well not the boat itself, some of the passengers and crew…
Of course, every silver lining has a cloud. My Spanish place has dropped in real world value should l sell up and convert the sale to sterling but you can't win a coconut every time, eh?
Depends on whether you see the Spanish place as a long term asset and a place to escape. I'd keep it if so.
