Just seen this on another forum I use and thought it worth posting here for info

‘’Beware Paypal Fraudsters - Folks, a friend's son has been scammed over Christmas. Selling something on eBay, the purchaser suggested a payment using friends and family to save fees.

He provided his email address and whilst waiting for payment, received an email "from PayPal" (purportedly), asking him to click here and confirm receipt of funds, which brought up the PayPal login screen, which he logged into.

Needless to say no funds materialised, but the link captured his password and then fraudsters took control of his PayPal account, immediately changing his email and password.

This all happened on Christmas Eve, over the last 2 days £000s of have been spent on his Paypal account, taking him massively overdrawn at his bank.
PayPal are closed for the festive period and whilst the bank has put a stop on his card, there is an agreement between the banks and PayPal, that banks honour all legitimate requests from PayPal to his account, as there isn't a check between PayPal and the fact that his account is now massively overdrawn. Until PayPal are back online, there is nothing he can do to stop these fraudsters - very clever.’’

Needless to say don’t use F&F for eBay purchases....

Another downside of PayPal is that even though you may be actually paying with your credit card you don’t get the protection you usually get from the credit card company.

In other words payments by PayPal aren’t covered by Section 75 of the Consumer Credt Act.

“Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act 1974 says if you pay for something costing between £100 and £30,000, specifically on a credit card, the card company is jointly liable with the retailer.”

These people are worse than muggers on the street. This type of theft has such a massive impact on the victims....

Yes eBay and PayPal a bunch of crooks that just don't care. I sold a good set of T140 crankcases to a Glaswegian crook for around £350 and he complained they were worn. He would not return them and would not answer my comments. I asked eBay to check the number on the cases and they as much as called me a conman. They insisted PayPal to return the money. I explained the same to them that the cases needed to be returned so I could check. Well they didn't even reply and just took my money and paid it back to this scammer. I lost the money and the cases. But I still have his address and next time I travel that way I shall go and reclaim my property. Or take the value out of his head.
    Joe.

Yes you live and learn more every day. That is why I don't use them any more especially eBay. I was a member for about five years and spent thousands every year or so. But it is as easy to go on the web and get even better deals. I don't use PayPal now I ask for bank details and do direct debit. That way I have insurance.

A genuine paypal communique will always be addressed to the customer by name. Anything received purporting to be from them without your name will be a scam. I've received a few of these over the years. I forward them straight to [email protected] and let their fraud department deal with them.

The latest email scam i have had is this pretending to be from DPD.

Due to a lack of complete address information, we have been unable to deliver your parcel number :

We require additional details to attempt re-delivery of this parcel, as the address provided appears to be incomplete.

Please provide the complete information for this address to attempt redelivery.

Currently, your parcel is being stored in our local depot.

However, if action is not taken before 16/12/2020, it will be returned to the original sender.

The scammers wanted ME TO PAY for a 2nd attempted delivery by giving all my card details. Which was strange as we weren't expecting any parcels.

Be super vigilant on the web sites you visit, check and triple check the address, there are several at the minute where your brain reads them and doesn’t register as being wrong llloydsbank, HBSC, Barcleys as examples, all of these look identical to the real sites but will steal your details. Be like me and live off overdrafts and there is nothing to steal
