Why give "old bill" an excuse to pull you up?

Personal plate. Perhaps it might look right. Just try it and see. Most decent police people will just tell you to change unless you get the one.
    Regards
    Joe.

They introduced a requirement to apply to DVLA for permission to use silver/black on historic vehicles this year. Wonder if they are starting to clamp down.

About 8 years ago I bought a Honda VTX1800 and the previous owner had put on an old style silver and black plate (full correct size and layout) to match the bike's colour. I didn't realise at the time that those old plates were in fact illegal and on my very first ride on the bike I got pulled over for no reason other than the plate (I was tootling along at 30 in a 30). I explained to the 'officer' that I had only just bought the bike (he concurred from his check) and did not know its plate was illegal. I politely apologised and said I would change it immediately on my return home.

He listened to my grovelling and then handed me a ticket that cost me £60. Wanker. Which is exactly what I called him (amongst other things) once I realised there was no getting out of it.

I would never have ridden it with that plate had I been aware of its illegality. Even more aggravating was the fact that unbeknownst to me at the time, there was a legal modern plate for the bike tucked in one of the saddlebags.

So, will you get away with it? Maybe. Not worth the risk in my opinion as I hate throwing away £60.

I ride with one, correct size but silver on black. 3500 miles so far and no problems. I even parked up next to a cop bike at box hill, he just smiled and said nothing ! I bought two plates one in silver black and one black on yellow from Flexi Plates, I keep the yellow one behind the black one so if I get pulled I can change it on the spot (sorry officer I forgot to swap them back after the show etc) but as I say not happened yet ! There are so many cars about with lights out and speeding vans it would have to be a very bored cop to bother pulling me just for that but it may happen.

    Punishments for Number Plate Offences
Incorrect number plate offences can lead to fines of up to £1000 for each specific number plate offence. It may be the case that a Notice of Intended Prosecution (NIP) will be affixed to car, for instance in a public car park, with a fixed penalty violation. There is no requirement for an NIP to be provided for number plate offences. There are sometimes defences available for this type of offence but misleading or lying to the courts can lead to larger fines. Police cameras are regularly used to catch drivers with dirty numbers plates or plates with incorrect spacing.

    Defences for Number Plate Offences
The police can make mistakes and this sometimes occurs when police cameras are used to capture number plate offences. Drivers who dispute the incorrect number plates can use photographic evidence of their number plates including specific measurements. Defending this type of offence will often mean bringing in experts depending on the offence. Legal advice from a solicitor should always be taken as to the best course of defence for this type of motoring offence.

    Number Plate Rules for Motorcycles
Motorcycles will of course have number plate regulations that differ from vehicles such as cars. Number plates must be displayed at the rear of the motorcycle. Two line number plates are standard for motorcycles registered after 1st September 2001; motorcycles registered before this date can display a three line plate. It is against the law to display a one line plate on a motorcycle regardless of the date of registration.

This sounds new, l have a vehicle first registered in 1974 and is registered as a historic vehicle. I was under the impression that once a car or bike reaches 40 years old,is registered as historic then black an silver plates are permitted without prior application.
Howard needs to be careful here as it is likely that some promotion hungry traffic cop will pull him over.

I live in beautiful biking country but the local plod are hot on anything at all, loud pipes, small number plates, Black&silver plates, speeding....anything at all.

I got followed the other day, at first they hung back to see if I was going to speed hoping I had not seen them, then they sat close behind me to do the PNC, then overtook me and went on their way.....thankfully they did not pull me as my back tyre was right on the limits, now changed.

Not sure where you saw this all vehicles registered as historic and are 40 years or older are able to display black and silver plates no notification needed.

Ok, thanks. I read it as meaning that you had to apply to DVLA as well as register for historic tax as it lists them as separate bullet points.
