Gidday, I'm a newbie to this forum from the land down under, although not a new Triumph owner. I currently ride a 2016 T120 and a recently purchased 1997 Trophy 900. Love 'em both for different reasons. Am interested in hearing from other Trophy owners about rattly engines. Mine has done 63,000km. Both previous owners indicate regular servicing and oil changes and when i just did a change I didn't find anything of concern in the old oil. Bike revs cleanly and makes the sort of power I would expect, will being quite smooth. Any comments/advice from current previous owners would be appreciated.
Hi Pete and welcome. Yes, as DD says, they can sound somewhat agricultural. Valve shims should be checked every 12,000 miles or 20,000kms, so at 63,000kms yours should have been done fairly recently - or not! It does make a difference to how the bike runs. Also check that the carbs are properly balanced. Idle speed should be around 1000rpm +/- 50rpm - like you can be that accurate!! And keep the battery in good condition to preserve the starter sprag clutch. My '95 Trident 900 - essentially a Trophy in a state of undress - has done 51,500 miles (I checked the other day after I put it to bed for the winter, and someone asked - guessed at 51,000 so not too far out), aka 82,400kms and still goes well, so enjoy your Trophy.
