Hi folks , I have just bought a troublesome Tiger steamer so I thought this forum might come in handy , at the moment my Tiger is a non starter so I'll be checking the plugs for a spark as soon as the socket arrives to get the plugs out . I also have a 1200 Trophy with a very similar engine but not the same problems.... And I have another 1200 Trophy for spares which may come in very handy . The Tiger only arrived today and it seems like its only firing on one cylinder so I pulled the carbs off and fuel seems to be getting into the inlet ports so its looking like there could be coil problems . Roll on the weekend and more investigations .... Lol
Laurie Thather Welcome to the family. I am sure the inmates will be able to help wit the problems. When you get a chance hit the upload a file button and show of the beasties. Here in the asylum we love pictures. Joe
Cheers Joe , I'll add some photos at the weekend If I get a chance , at the moment its in bits with all the plastics removed and the wife isn't happy lol . I'm sure it will get us to Austria next year .... It'll be fine !
Laurie Thatcher. Great. Do stay with us on this one as we will get you going. Believe me there are some clever inmates on here. Not me i just mimic what they say. And if your beastie has been laid up do check the old fuel and ensure the feed is clear. You know there is a dedicated tiger section might be called steamer. Tell your good lady it will go and it will be reliable. Like my good lady she always says at least you see something for my squandering i am not sitting in a pub piddling it up the urinal. Joe.
That's a very good point, I only squander on Triumphs.... She would have been fine if the engine ran.... Too picky really
Laurie Thatcher. It will run and it will be fantastic. I got faith in you. When you get a chance drop a note with a few more points about the bike. Like miles on the clock service history if any. Had it been laid up. And what you are getting from the beastie now when you switch it on a try to start. We will have you running. And you know the steamers are worth money now even breaking one can fetch more than you paid for it so you have a win win. My other half sometimes breaths a sigh but it is because i sometime get very down when things don't work. She like me to be happy in what i do. Joe.
Thanks for the faith you have in me Joe , I will get it running and we will be touring on it in Europe next year . I wanted to pay more and get an on the road machine but finances dictated that I had that I had to go the cheap route and buy a project . The bike is a 1998 steamer and has 31,000 on the clock and came with no history other than its had 5 owners and its been off the road for sometime and it has a tax disc on it from 2015 .... Maybe its been off the road since then ? Tomorrow I'll put an old plug into the HT leads and see if we get a spark , if no spark I'll raid my spare trophy and rob the coils off it and swap them over and try again ..... Lets hope tomorrow I get the thing firing .
Laurie Thatcher. This way you know your bike and trust the work. Little tip if it sparks try a cap of petrol down each plug hole and see what happens. Your bike is a baby yet. I do presume you have changed the oil and filter. And checked the air filter. Joe.
I haven't changed the oil filter yet but the air filter is out and it doesn't look like its ever been changed . The filters are on order but before I replace the air box I'm going to make a few alterations to enable the filter to be changed from one end so I don't have to remove the carbs to change the filter next time its done .
