    Hi
I need to source another engine for my '05 1050 Sprint, some are advertised as being from a bike with ABS, mine is non ABS, I can't think why an engine from an ABS model wouldn't fit my bike, can anyone confirm?

    thanks

    Hi XT,

I needed help from Triumph last year and called their tech guys, I got straight through to them and they confirmed whatI needed to know.
Not meaning to fob off your question, but I think this is one area that must be answered correctly otherwiseyou could buy an engine you can't use!

It would be goodto be able to fit an ABS engine if it is younger and/or cheaper

Thanks Red, called them up and was chatting to a tech within a minute - brilliant.
The only difference is the speed sensor, on ABS models it is on the ABS wheel sensor, on non ABS it is on the gearbox and is simply fixed by removing the blanking plate and installing the sensor from the old engine.
    happy days.

    Bloody fantastic :)
That is what you call a result.

So you can find a 1,000 mile ABS engine for a couple of hundred and fit it quick with just a minor adjsutment.:D

need to do some tests on the original engine first as I would hate to buy another motor and find it was elec failure for example.

Update, the old engine had a snapped cam chain and no compression, I have bought a 2007 engine which I fitted last weekend, had some challenges as the oil cooler and oil pipes changed between these years as did the lower fairing mount but I have managed to swap it all over.
I sent the radiator away for a pressure test and it failed with 3 holes and not repairable so I have bought another from eBay.
Need to put in some oil, coolant and fresh petrol and see if it starts....

Update, new engine is running, needs a tune as doesn't always like to idle and sometimes coughs and stalls when revving from idle, got a VAGCOM cable and software coming tomorrow and hopefully that'll give me a clue to why and also why the ECU light is on.

Took the old engine apart and found the cam chain hadn't snapped but had jumped off the cam shaft gears, not sure why, and the valves are bent.

    Update:
The VAG-Com cable and TuneECU software showed 5 error codes, one was expected as the tank was removed, all the others said that various sensors had direct shorts to ground but one said the TPS Sensor was low on voltage, this got me thinking as there are 2 connectors that are identical and located right beside each other, one is the speedo sensor (if I remember right) and the other the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor), when I fitted the new engine I wasn't sure which was which, turned out I had them the wrong way around, once connected correctly the TPS gauge (TuneECU on my laptop) showed movement when I turned the throttle, hurray, all other error codes where then cleared and I hope they don't come back.
I haven't managed to start it as the battery has finally packed up but this would explain the poor idle and rough running, new battery arriving tomorrow.
VAG Com cable: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/301840068782 £9.95, dealer would have charged £100's to fault find and fix this issue so this is a no-brainer.
TuneECU (software to use with the above cable) http://www.tuneecu.com/TuneECU_En/index.html

I expect this will be my last post on this thread as the bike is now done and took me to Norwich and back this weekend in record time (from Bedford).
It went straight through the MOT last week.

Still got a few bits to do, RHS fairing, rear pegs painting and fitting.

Excellent work Carter, well done - now ENJOY !!!!!

PS About the cam chain jumping off the camshaft sprocket - it was possibly due to the chain tensioner lunching itself. Bits then get under the chain and 'prise' the chain off the sprocket.

Yes, there were bits of tensioner in the bottom of the case and the sides were completely gone.
