Like many of us old farts (speak for yourself I hear you say) in our later years, I've grudgingly accepted its a good thing to possess a mobile. Living on my own now as I do with no land line other than the Internet connection, I've always thought of them as a kind of necessary evil, but was sure I could live without one if I really needed to. We all did pre 1980's didn't we, so why would it be so hard now?. My kids and friends can contact me of course and if you need to book a Dentist/Doctor/Vet (delete as applicable) appointment, its relatively easy to do so and saves you trekking down to the establishment itself but you could do that if absolutely necessary. OK, where is this going I hear you ask? Bear with me.

On Sunday, the weather being half decent here in Yorkshire pudding land, I taxed a couple of my bikes and made my maiden voyages of 2024 on two wheels. Being a complete Pillock,, I'd stuffed my mobile in one of my jacket pockets without making sure it was secure and yes, you've guessed it, somewhere along my route the phone decided to try some skydiving and left the premises as it were. In several vain attempts to retrieve the aforementioned escapee, I retraced my route at slow speed, scanning the road itself and the verges, but to no avail. I hadn't actually felt the phone drop out of my pocket so it could be anywhere along a 15 mile route. Arriving back home, I thought I'd better ring my service provider and cancel the SIM in case some oik picks it up and decides to ring his grandma in New Zealand at my expense. But then it hits you. I don't have a phone now, so how can I ring and report it missing? Fortunately my kindly neighbour lent me his and I rang up and cancelled the SIM and ordered a new one. Hopefully it will be here today or tomorrow and I have an old phone I can put it in to get back in the land of the connected. Fast forward to today. Another nice day weatherwise so I thought I'll tax the STRS and go out on that. As we all know I can do that on line without a phone, so I go to the Gov website and it kicks me off saying the MOT for the STRS ran out yesterday which unfortunately it did. No worries, I thought I'll ring my friendly MOT man and get it booked in asap. Then it hits you again no phone. So reluctantly I have to admit I've been somewhat lost without a mobile and its only been two days. That's life in the 21st century for you.

I'm no exception in that I carry a phone every time I go out, especially on 2 wheels or 4, just in case of breakdowns. I'm on pay-as-you-go and put a full £10 of credit on my balance in November and I still have £8.60 left but I've used it more than usual lately. We have a landline at home with free calls so any "phoning round" gets done on that. I never, ever use mobile data except in LIFE THREATENING EMERGENCIES!!!
Mind you, I did have to use data yesterday when I took a wrong turn on the way to an out of town dealer for a test ride and wasn't sure where I was. That was definitely life threatening 'cos if I got there too late for the demo ride I would have to kill someone.:joy:

Sorry for your lost. Thanks for the well narrated story. This is our thing nowadays. We hate those mobiles, but we can not really live without them. ;)

I ought to have mentioned that I've only ever truly lost one mobile phone which is now at the bottom of Loch Lomond.
I've come very close several times though. The most recent was a few months ago when I put my Iphone on the rear bumper of the the SUV in the supermarket carpark while I loaded the shopping, forgot it and drove home around 3 miles and it was still sat there when I got back!

As a fellow old fart I know where your coming from. They are a duel edged sword and somewhat annoying as you can be contacted any time of the day and you forget the joy of days gone by when you left the house and no one could get you until you returned. The same with sat navs. I love the art of map reading but there is no doubting the feeling of putting an address in the sat nav and knowing your getting there.

If you have a google account and download the "find my device" app and register your phone on there you can see where it is. You can also do this on the web from a laptop etc.

Had the same happen to me, phone came out of the holder at 50mph on a dual carriageway at night, I highly recommend my phone case, retraced my steps but couldn't find it so had the bright idea of getting my wife to call it.....well you see the problem there:rolleyes: then I remembered my newly purchased apple watch had a little thingy that when you pressed it it made the phone ring, found it in seconds, it probably has the find my what's it on it too!
