So, out for a ride Christmas day and the 2001 Bonny starts to misfire badly. It was raining and I had washed it the day before so I thought maybe water had got in somewhere. But this would be the first time in 14000 miles since I`ve had it. It did get a bit better after a while but would not pull over 60mph.

The bike now has over 50000 miles on it and is 15 years old. I`ve read about Triumph coils not lasting very well and I am wondering if it is time for a new coil?

Clean all electrics first with wd40 or similar, more quick checks are spark plugs and fuel filters.

I had a similar problem on an 04 America a few years back as an intermittent fault, turned out to be too tight a bend in the earth lead from the battery which had fractured the inner wire. Also check for moisture in the connectors to the igniter; they don't like water spraying up under the tank (had that one on my current speedmaster). Cheers

Today I have taken the coil off, cleaned it up and sprayed all connections with ACF50. Took it for ride and it`s just as bad. Misses quite badly as revs increase. Does seem to get better when I pull out choke so tomorrow will strip and clean fuel system. Where is the Igniter?

On my speedmaster (EFI model) it is under the tank on the left hand side of the downtube just behind the coils.

If you are doing the carbs make sure to check the vacuum seal (Piston) for splits :)

Well, bikes sorted. Took the carbs off, checked everything. Found lots of black crap in the float bowls so may have an ethanol destroying my fuel pipes problem. Will change all fuel lines soon. Bought a new Nology coil from Sprint Manufacturing in Wiltshire who I cant rate highly enough. Ordered Tuesday received today. Put that on and the bike runs better than ever.
