Hi, I'm looking for everyone's opinion. The speed needs a new set of tyres, I really liked the feel and grip of the standard K3 but now they're shot I would prefer a tyre that would last a bit longer. I've read reviews on the roadtec 01 and they seem to be the tyres to beat, though I also quite like pilot road 4. My pal swears by Bridgestone bt023 and I quite liked them when I borrrowed his street. Anybody got these tyres on their speed and how do you compare them to the standard k3's.

    Thanks Ali

I think for the average rider and road use whether a tyre is good or not depends mostly on that area north of the eyebrows, if you have confidence in it then it will feel good. :)
Any of the current leading sport-touring tyres will have more grip than you can use 99% of the time and give the best mileage, but ultimately it depends on your priorities ....better grip & handling or better mileage, you can't have both :(.
Sport tyres will usually give you a more radiused profile making the bike turn quicker/easier and a softer compound for added grip giving you a bigger safety margin (unless you just ride faster and use it all up :D).
So going to the 01 might feel quite a bit different (if comparing new for new), unfortunately unlike MCN test riders us normal guys are always going from knackered, flatted tyres to nice new ones, so it's always difficult/impossible to get a real comparison.
My Speedy is a weekend toy with the occasional short touring and knocks up about 5k mls per year, I think the Metz M7RR's are going to do that, so I'm happy to pay £250 a year for my fun. The M7RR's are probably mid way between the K3 and 01, so an ideal compromise IMO.

I am a big advocate of Metzelere Z8 tyres which have now been superseeded by the Roadtec 01. As soon as my Diablo tyres are worn on my Speed Triple R, I will be putting on the Roadtec 01. Very good reviews, grip in dry and wet is fantastic, long distance wearability etc.
Make sure you get hte correct variant though as some are specific for big heavy tourers,so have reinforced sidewalls.

BTW I was averaging over 8,000 miles on the Z8 tyres, and only changed them when they squared off due to the motorway mileage

Thanks for the replies gents, Im leaning towards the 01s. I'm the same as you Col C, my bike is a toy.
I definitely won't get close to pushing the performance of either the bike or the tyres to anywhere near there limits but I still have fun when I'm out on it.

Is there a reason nobody on this forum seems to even mention the Pirelli angel gt's?

I've got the Angel GTs on mine and i think they are great tyres, more than enough grip in the wet and the dry and you get pretty good life out of them,I've not tried any other make on my speed triple but any sport touring tyre will be good, and unless you will be doing lots of track days i wouldn't bother with an out and out sports tyre

So I had the roadtec fitted today, all feels good even with the same front racetec which has worn evenly over the whole radius. Going to change the front for a roadtec prior to my trip to Spain.

I got the roadtec 01 s fitted last week and done around 150 miles so far, no complaints they seem to warm up quickly and grip well. Really happy I went with them.
