Being new to all this biking malarky I decided I should lube my Street Twin chain.

Having watched some Youtube video, purchased some Tec Bobbins, a paddock stand and some Lube I'm all set.

So at the weekend I Lubed, like a man possessed with this stuff.

Today I went to clean Edna and bugger me it looks like she has spent the night in a candy floss factory, this WD40 stuff is like glue, not only is it everywhere anything with in a hundred miles has stuck to it.

Not a happy bunny as , so firstly, is it just elbow grease to get this sticky mess off the wheels, chain guard, exhausts and the chain

Secondly I've booted this evil sticky monster over next doors garden, is there a less sticky chain lube solution I should be using

Of course the solution could be don't put so much on, I did go a tad bonkers, nevertheless sticky fecker, How should I clean this off the actual chain, I have the evils sister WD40 chain cleaner?

I use Muc-off dry chain lube, this doesn't make the mess you are talking of, it is available in Halfords, you could also try Wurth dry chain lube which I have used in the past.
Always better to apply chain lube liberally to a warm dry chain, so do it when you get in from a ride rather than before you go out.
To clean the excess gunk off that the current chain lube has left (it sounds like you might of put on too much), either use WD40 sprayed on a bit of rag or paraffin.

Yes to all the above, sounds like you were a bit overzealous! Warm chain allows product to seep into areas a cold chain won’t, always clean the chain with a chain cleaner or parrafin using a brush and cloth, take bike out for a quick spin to warm the chain, apply oil to warm chain using a paintbrush or cloth soaked in it. Leave for a while then wipe off excess oil

Right so dont just spay tons of the stuff on a cold chain whilst spinning the rear wheel, what a tit, thanks chaps, maybe I'll climb over my neighbours and give the WD40 another chance as this was clearly operator error

If you do a lot of miles fit a scotoiler if you set it up correctly it will make very little mess and your chain and sprockets will last for ever! And if you are doing a long run or if you are touring it will save you Carrying chain lube

See attached. I use this chain lube and like it a lot. No mess or fling off. I also place a cut up brown paper bag behind the chain to prevent over-spray from getting on unwanted bike parts. Works for me!

Repooh, I use the Motorex chain wax and chain cleaner, expensive stuff but it works well for me. I've tried different brands but always end up going back to Motorex. What Dozers Dad said about the EP90 oil is true, I tried it on the Bonneville and the chain was very quiet....but...... perhaps I applied to much of the gear oil because on the DGR run it splattered every where. It stood for a week after application and I wiped it down with a clean rag the day before but it still splattered. It was a biatch to clean afterwards, especially on the matt surfaces it got on. What did I do wrong Jez ? I'm too scared to use it again now after the murderous cleaning session I had to go through.

........meanwhile a cloth sprayed with regular WD40 shifts excess chain gunk of whatever brand from rims, chain, chain, chain guard etc. Just keep it off the tyre!

Another vote here for paint brush application. Spray a bit of the chainlube into the cap or a small open pot and brush it on - a tin of lube lasts a surprisingly long time when you only put just enough on.

Scottoiler or similar. Specially if you do long runs and tour.
