OK then, I've obviously got a dragging clutch that wont let go on my 2011 Speedy...

    Symptoms...
Rock hard down change but blip the throttle and it slips in like a velvet glove...
Very hard to move in gear with clutch in
Starting in gear with clutch in and the bike tries to move a bit

Cable adjusted correctly but It has some Titax daft shorty levers fitted and even though the span is set fully out and I pull the lever to the bar, it just doesn't seem to move the clutch actuator arm much...

Anyone else had issues with Titax levers ?

Think I might try and get some standard levers off ebay to try...

Sounds like a lever issue if you have 3mm free play at the lever / mount, also the clutch basket can get dirty on this model and cause similar symptoms. The cure for that is strip out the clutch and clean basket and plates and refit with new oil n filter.

Hi Jody, I've heard on a number of occasions of peeps who buy after-market levers and on the LHS clutch lever they do not install them correctly ie they neglect to remove the brass bush from the old lever to install it in the new one.

Any chance this has happened with your bike?

    Cheers

    No bother
PayPal to [email protected] if that's ok and drop me a mail with your address and I'll get them off to you in the next day or so
Oh and mines a 2012R if that matters and you're sure they'll fit.
I've never used them cos I bought mine with short (Pazzo???) things on it and these came in a bundle of bits.
    Cheers

Finally got round to changing the oil in my bike yesterday/today.... 2011 Speedy for those of you reading and not reading the whole thread.

(That's the bad point of using my bike everyday and working 6/7 days a week a lot of the time)

Changed to Silkolene Fully synth, new filter, soaked clutch plates in oil overnight after cleaning them, scuffed up my steels with a scotch pad as they were like mirrors.

I even read my workshop manual and put the steels back in the correct order :D

So let's see if that stops my clutch plates becoming like a snapper turtle with a grudge and not letting go...

Also new plugs are on the cards for tomorrow....

+1 biglads comment ref bush missing from after market levers, several have found this mistake.
Also even on a "normal" functioning 1050 an oil change usually gives a noticeable improvement in gear change. (which gradually tails off without noticing until next service)

I've stuck with the OEM levers....Don't like the way the Titax shorty levers feel.

Also I bought a new bush as the original was a bit loose.

Hi Jody, is your cable moving freely in both directions ? Could be your cable just starting to wear out/fray ? Its happened to me on a couple of my bike's, I keep them and do lots of miles on them , so I've seen most things wear out and know that a fraying cable can give those symptoms.

    The story goes.....

Test rode bike and it was fine, bought the bike, ran fine (serviced when bought)

Clutch started dragging as the days went by

Took the clutch pack out cleaned off with cleaner and popped back in (didn't scuff up the steels though)

Clutch was ace for about 3 days then slowly started dragging more each day

When I removed them again this time, they were all stuck together in one lump again

So changed to Silkolene Fully synth, scuffed the steels....

    Clutch fibres look like new

    Watch this space :D

    Bit confused now......

Seems a bit hit and miss..

When knocking it into 1st cold there is no clonk at all....after riding its like a fat kid lunging at a dropped chocolate bar

If i ride like a Nun on her way to church the down changes arent too bad

If i give it a bit (clutch slipping from the lights and knocking down 2 gears and slipping the clutch into corners) it drags again and getting neutral at a standstill is impossible

I'm no Rossi (think more Carlos Checa on a bad day) so im not giving it that much agro

A few clutch steels were a bit blue when i cleaned them up

Do you think new steels are needed ?

As I said before the fibres look like brand new

    Cheers

    Hi Jody,
May I ask something, when you put the plates back in where the first ones into the basket a bit of a tight fit or like a glove.
I replaced my clutch plates (plus HD springs and oil) recently, as I was getting the same symptoms - difficult to get into neutral when warm/hot. The first few plates in were a tad tight and I think they are not sliding free when the clutch is pulled in. Also I have not heard of roughing up the steels before, mine were quite shiny, I thought 'smooth' would be their correct state.
I am also now having to pull the lever in all the way as it starts gripping a lot earlier in the lever travel now.
I am considering taking the plates out again and sanding a fraction off the plates 'teeth' to ensure they have total free movement, and roughing the steels if that is something that helps.

Unfortunately new gaskets each time isn't cheap.

Errrr yeah i suppose they were tight ish...

I might whip mine apart again atcthexweekend if i get time and give them a check on gaps

I was always led to believe shiny was bad as a smooth surface could cause the frictions to stick to them....

Like if you drop something flat on a wet surface and it sticks like its vacuumed on

Makes sence I suppose if both surfaces are smooth, but as one is steel and the other compressed cork I would think that would only happen with worn friction plates.
I will look into that before taking mine appart again.

RT The plates should slide in and out of the basket easily, make sure that the plates and basket have no burred edges on them. Also make sure that there is plenty of new oil on the plates when installing them.

Jody I would advise you to stop slipping the clutch as they are not the best clutches in the world, and multi downshifts are still perfectly possible even without slipping the clutch. Abusing a clutch is fine if you are going to strip the clutch every ride like you would do on an old track bike and replace parts on a regular basis, if you feel your riding style means you have to slip the clutch on downshifts then you should rely fit a slipper clutch :)

    Cheers Darkman...

I had a scenario the other day where the clutch worked fine bimbling to work in the rain

As I went to stop at the barrier into the bike park the barrier shot up so I tried to keep going....Sadly I was in 2nd at about 3 mph so I slipped the clutch

I didn't want to wait and go down to first as my momentum kinda stopped as I was under the barrier and our barrier must be a 1800s French Guillotine reincarnated as it's had a few dawdling riders more than once....

After I made it through and went to park trying to get neutral was impossible....The lever was solid....Turned it off and click neutral easy

So there must be something causing drag as it heats up....Now I've done the oil it is just when hot whereas before was at cold too...
