Heard from a mate who supposedly has a mate who works at Triumph who said they were working on a larger capacity version of the 675 Daytona.

No idea how true this is but I hope its true, The current 1200 engine in the Explorer may be a good engine but its shaft drive and too slow revving to be a sports bike engine.

An up sized Daytona engine could also be the perfect engine to power an updated Speed Triple, which is slowly getting left behind in the power stakes by the likes of BMW's S1000R and KTM's Super Duke. Wonder how much power they could safely extract from a high revving 1200 Daytona engine (190BHP?)

Can't see why they can't repeat the incredible success in the litre as they've had in the notoriously competitive middle class. Are Triumph looking at BSB/WSB, could this spawn a 1075R Daytona, 1075 Speed Triple, merely conjecture but hey ho.

Triumph have been down this road before with a big capacity sports bike and from memory they scrapped the project as it was going to be too expensive to try and keep up with the other makers.

I don't think triumph will put the 1200 engine into the speed triple for a couple of reasons, 1 weight (that is a big old chunk of metal the 1200) and 2 From what I understand the 1050 engine is not been used anywhere near the sort of output that I could put out.

Power isn't everything and if you start hunting another 10 or 20 bhp you have a very good chance of loosing the best selling point of the bike is how linear and smooth the engine is.

I mean how fast do you really want to go an a bike without a faring (It does tend to get a bit draughty)

    Cheers

Actually the main reason that this won't happen is that the big capacity sports bike market has shrunk a hell of a lot over the last 10 or so years.

Triumph have most probally done the maths and for the model to break even they would have to sell say 5000 units a year and they may have projected that they would only be able to sell half of that amount.

They may want to do it but I've would say Mr Bloor is a pretty smart cookie and would put a stop to it sharpish if it wouldn't make money.

I bet they will use the 800 engine to match that of the MV F3 and the new R8. The competition is too fierce in the Ltr series. The Ltr industry is dead but the middle weights are holding strong (for now) The Ducati 899 has done very well since it's release and the F3 800 is over taking the 675 in sales. I tell you what the 800 in the Daytona would be one hell of a bike.

Only issue with the current 800 Triple engine is that they have increased the CC by lengthening the piston stroke, it gives great low down torque but am not sure it would rev high enough to make big horse power.
Yep hear the 899 is a mega bike and nearly as quick as the 1199 in the right hands, makes you wonder who would splash their cash on the bigger bike
