Hi Guys and Gals Ok i`ve done this 3 times now and luckily always been at home. Tiger 955i 2006, first bike in 10yrs and So HAPPY. Hardly been out on it as i got it last Sept, and wont ride it on damp roads. Twitchy bum syndrome lol. Anyway, when i park up at the house or garage (CORRECT ME IF I`M WRONG) i can`t take the key out unless i turn the bars and put it into lock. Thing is, it`s such a short turn between LOCK and PARK, both obviously allow you to take the key out. Once you have the key out it`s so easy to walk away from the bike and forget about it. 3 times now i have went back to the bike key in NOTHING. I must have turned the key that wee bit further onto park, left the lights on (bike bought with the twin headlight conversion). Boom totally flat battery. As i said luckily alway done at home and i have a booster jump starter pack in the garage. Seat off, clips on, starts no bother. What if i was in the highlands some where and i was that unfortunate. My real question is, If i turned the key and the bike was dead, would it take a jump start by pushing the bike. That would kill me being 60yr old. Also when i turn the key i have to cancel the alarm before i get my panel lights. How would i get through that trying to push and figure all that. I know now that the very obvious thing to do is to check before you walk away, and i full intend to, but if i could get an answer to this question it may also help others who may be caught out in this situation. IF I CAN DO IT, I`M SURE OTHER CAN Great forum guys, i don`t post alot but sook up the info that is put up. Thanks to all, and you all stay safe. Regards noddy Keith Morayshire
Hi Noddy, You should post this in the Tiger section or the Technical. I suggest if you're out in the wilds try and park on a hill.
Hi I also run a Tiger 955i as my daily transport and tour a lot on it as well. I can't say I've had your issue in the last 40 k miles on my bikes but I do seem prone to walking away with the key left in the ignition ....woops! For some reason I don't do this with my other bike...a tbird 1600. I do however carry a small set of bike jump leads in my panniers when I do a trip of any great distance. These take up little space and are a reassuring thing to have around.Only time I needed them was to start a friend's Harley in Belgium in December....always amusing watching these things cope with the cold.
It sounds like your ignition switch could be worn or has been damaged in the past by an attempted theft or similar. You could disconnect the wire from the ignition switch which activates the parking light to avoid this happening again.
Noddy6560 Yes I would go for the ig switch. To go into park you should have to press the key down and twist. Also if the bike has been sitting without a tender your Battery is probably shot. And if you continuously use a jump starter your bike and electrics won't like it just to much and you will again lose your battery and damage things like rectifier. See if you can get a battery with a little higher amperage. Tickle charge before fitting and your beast should bark. Regards Joe.
Hi and Welcome. I don't know about the key turning issue but I bought a small power bank that also doubles up as a jump starter. The idea was to use it to charge my mobile and camera batteries while camping and as I needed one why not have one that can also jump start the bike. I once did the same turning the key too far on my 2002 trophy and the parking light drained the battery. Had to bump start that time..... It knackered my friend.... Here's a link to the one https://www.mymemory.co.uk/powerseed-mini-boost-2a-car-jump-starter-portable-power-bank.html I've got but it's out of stock. I see amazon have a lot that sound like they'd fit the bill. I've never had to try it so far though so can't vouch for it....
Hi Keith and welcome to the forum Looking forward to seeing your ride and best of luck solving your ignition issue
.l have had the same thing.....its possible to lock the steering and have the side lights on...it's only one click further on the ignition key....my old BMW had the same issue and l had a flat battery a couple of times. I am very wary now and always check the lights are not on before I leave the bike.
