The America was in for its 6000 mile service and I had a choice what courtesy bike I wanted. Having recently ridden a few TBirds I decided something completely different was in order and went for a used Street Triple.

What a bonkers little bike

Light, brilliant handling and brakes, excellent gearbox, and a more than willing engine. It should be banned imho. It's not safe for a man my age. I thought I'd left all that hooning about behind many moons ago. It positively encourages behaviour not compatible with a bloke of advanced years.

Blimey, it's small. I'm only 5' 8" but felt really cramped and managed about 30 miles before neck, knee, back and wrist pain set in and found that the only way to ameliorate the discomfort was to get where I need to get to quickly  - "It woz the bike wot did it officer"

Now if only it came with a set of vouchers to a chiropractor.....

You want to try it's big brother next time as the Speed Triple is noticeablly bigger

Your most probally just too used to riding the cruisers now as I know when I rode the new T Bird Storm I really felt uncomfortable on it, it's what your body get used to I suppose (even my Trident felt weird when I got back on after only riding the Daytona for so long)

If you had an issue with the Street Triple I take it that the Daytona 675 is out of the question then

Thanks Steve, although it was good fun for a while I couldn't live with that style of bike no matter how big it was. Thirty years ago perhaps but these days I prefer a more sedate ride. I also do a lot of miles and I really can't see me doing it on something like that. I had a GS for 10 years and a Tiger for nearly 3 years and I've only had the America for 8 months and the cruiser is simply a better bike for me

My wife owns a Street Triple and loves it. I take it out for a cramped blast once in a while (I'm 6' 3") and still enjoy it.

I thought it was a brilliant little bike and if I had the money, garage and empty roads I'd love one as a second bike

I have just traded in 2013 STR with lots of trick bits on it.Like Folkbloke I am of advanced years so I now have a new Bonneville T100 SE. But back to the STR what a cracking little bike, everyone should have a ride on one to find out what a brilliant bike it is.I took mine to the TT last year and had emmense fun.Gonna take the Bonny this year for a more sane ride.

Folkbloke - similar story - same age, same size... bought the America and it was a great bike - traded it for the T-Bird 1600 and found it is as easy to ride and more stable at low turning speeds. Once it is "on the clutch" and moving the extra weight is not noticeable at all. The new Commander is even easier for riders with shorter frames ie. arms.
Does your America sometimes get caught between 1st and 2nd gears making neutral difficult to find?

I loved the TB when I rode it but couldn't commit to the extra £s. It's my next bike without a doubt

I don't have any problems with the America except the seat. I've just put a Norman Hyde seat on and that's pretty **** as well (hard as f**k) but at least it's a better shape and the Airhawk works a lot better (at least I hope it does as I've 3000 miles in France to do very soon...........)

I share your concerns with the Trumpet seats. I put the Mustang seat(s) on the Bird - both my wife and I find them great... good luck in France - our son lives in Switzerland where the roads are in far better shape than in my neck of the woods

Co-incidence eh? My daughter lives in Switzerland near Basel and I'm actually going to see her first before meeting up with a French mate in Marseille, my wife in Montpellier for a week and then a couple of biking pals for another trip. Three weeks of riding so that seat should get plenty of use (and will probably decide if I keep the bike or get a TBird!)

    Where is your son?
