Holed Sump

    HI, my name is Adrian and I have a 1999 Legend. Went out for my first ride of the season on Sunday . On the way home ran over something in the road and holed the sump. I've taken off the exhaust and it seems that the back two sump screws are obscured by the suspension link. The Haynes manual says to use an auxiliary stand or hoist. don't think my garage roof is strong enough. Any suggestions or tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Adrian.

    Time to invest in some paddock stands. Go for a rear that hooks onto bobbin on swingarm, and a front that lifts on the headstock so you can remove wheel/forks for any work needed.

    Add a couple of temporay wood columns fixed temporary to the roof structure on each side of the bike to reduce the span. Probably don't need them if your roof has ever supported snow. All structural elements sag safely under load. Plaster or gypsum board ceilings are designed for 1" sag in 30 feet to prevent cracks. Other ceiling types 1" in 20 feet. Structural steel comes pre-bent into an arc called camber. So when installed it looks straight when it sags under it's own weight it looks straight. Seen steel delivered with 10" of camber.

    You’d be amazed what a joist can take. Just lift as close to the wall as you can and not in the middle of the span. Prop the middle if necessary.
