Hello, I’m new to your site and new to the triumph brand. Thank you for accepting my request to join. I bought a 1999 thunderbird sport 900cc and have issues (I think) with the oil. A mechanic put this back on the road following a period of being stood for around 2/3 years. There was a petrol leak from the carbs (now been refurbished) The oil is very pale and watery in the level window. The engine looks clean when I remove the cap. But I’m not happy with the colour of the oil. I will upload a photo to show you. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Kind regards Phil
Hi and welcome. Looking at the oil I would complete a full oil change, including a new filter and then monitor. If you see a similar change in the fresh oil you can decide what your next course of action should be.
Hi and welcome to the forum . As @Wessa says - a full change of the oil and filter then you know where your starting from and can monitor any changes.
That looks like pee, probably diluted with petrol from the leaking carbs, definitely change the oil and filter.
Yes the mechanic has changed the oil, and I would hope filter. I’ve drained a little oil out and feel more assured that it’s the correct colour and consistency. Maybe the view glass is discoloured Many thanks for the replies
Just recently back on the road. I’ve used it a bit and the oil now seems the correct colour. Many thanks Phil
Excellent choice of beast, Phil, a classic already ! It looks to me as the oil had emulsified with sitting in a very cold shed/garage/outside or similar ? Whatever, yes, oil ,(and filter ?) change good, but I'd only give it a few miles to get things nice and warm and change at least the oil again .. just to make sure all the little corners are cleaned up. These are good, strong engines, pull hard, and deserve to be treated in a friendly manner ! Good luck .. and many miles.
