Hi all! Just thought I'd say hello and apologise in advance for the many questions I'll be asking regarding Triumph Motorcycles! I'm 33, own a VT 125 (which I'm selling if anyone is interested) and have been riding for 5 years off and on. I am currently on day 2 of my DAS, mod 1 is booked for Thursday! Excited and nervous (damn U-Turn). I discovered Triumphs on YouTube (street triple) and had my heart set on getting one, went to a dealer and had a look - actually preferred the Meatiness and look of the Speed triple and now I'm looking at possibly getting one but after a test ride, want to see if I can handle it. I'm well aware that it's a litre bike and too much bike for many especially for those that have just passed, hence the test ride first but I do believe in my ability as a safe rider and I'm sure I'll be able to handle it. Also I've heard that it's silky smooth and not that much different from the Street Triple which makes me feel more confident that I'll be ok on it. First question: it has 25000 miles on the clock and its a 2010 model priced at £5500 - is that a lot of mileage for the age? I don't belive it is as i do 10k a year as commuting every day but a few people I've mentioned it too have given me doubts. Thanks and once again, sorry for the questions! Nick
Hi and welcome to the forum. Good luck with the test (I passed mine last May: U-turn not a problem but keep your speed up in the swerve test!). I'm sure the more experienced members on the forum will be able to give you sound advice on the bike - big step up from a 125.
Hi and welcome to the forum Not sure that I would suggest a Speed Triple as a first big bike as you are talking about 130bhp. The Street Triple would be a better bike or even an earlier Speed Four although if you are looking to commute something with a faring would be better, if you can find a tidy one a TT600 may also be worth having a look at. Cheers Steve
Hi and welcome to the forum and good luck with your test. Sadly I don't think you will find many members on here that would recommend buying a Speed Triple as a first bike and I doubt any dealer will give you a test ride on one as a newly qualified rider. To answer your question 25000 miles is not huge, same motor is in the Triumph touring Sprint ST and people do big miles on them and so long as its got full service history you should not expect to many issues. Overall condition is more important. If you are looking at spending that sort of cash you should be able to find a lower mileage Street Triple. The Street although still fast and not a perfect first bike, is lighter than the Speed, handles better, and in the lower rev range is not as intimidating to ride as the Street. If you are a large tall guy the only issue is you may find the Street a physically small and perhaps a little cramped. Good luck in whatever you decided, if you do go for the litre bike I highly recommend you take some more ongoing training: we have a member (Col) who I'm sure can offer advice.
check out prices of speed triples on autotrader , ebay & mcn to give you an idea of the market value - there's nothing wrong with a bike having 25k after 4-5 yrs , as long as it's been looked after well with regular oil changes etc . sometimes extremely low mileage bikes just mean they've been neglected & forgotten . It does seem quite a lot of bike for a new rider , although you are in your 30's & obviously not new to roadcraft presumably. 30 yrs ago when I passed my bike test I went from a 125 to a 250 , and then within a year bought a z1100 shaft drive Kawasaki at 22 yrs old . I did however start doing the old star rider courses & then later did Rospa & then buggered about doing various riding courses & stuff ever since. Now I just ride & tour but it was a good grounding & I would recommend further learning for anyone , plus learn about maintenance , its imperative if you're gonna be a biker . Their not like cars.
First of all welcome to the forum and good luck in passing your test Personally I think a speed triple is a big jump as a first bike ,But I don't blame you for wanting one as they are a cracking bike or am I being a bit biased as I own one !!!!!! if you do go down the speed triple route as other forum members have said get some extra training,it might save your life one day 25000 miles is not big miles as long as the bike has been looked after but I do think the price is a bit steep Considering it's winter and bike sales slow down this time of year Have you thought abough buying privately and from this forum ? I brought my 2009 speed triple privately last year with 6000 miles on the clock for Just over £5,000 What ever you decide good luck and ride safe
