    Hi

Did my CBT 2 years ago (at 48, the instructor wished me a happy mid life crisis), passed my A1 in November last year (or thereabouts), met a chap called Dave in a bike shop as I was looking to move on from my Kymco 125, he showed me his yellow Daytona, which was for sale, turned it on, and I just started smiling. What a noise!

I think he saw me coming though! Note that none of what follows I actually care about, because when its on the road, and I twist that throttle.....

    Bought an ebay service manual.

First it was a category D write off (I know, should have walked away), there were some cracks in the fairing, (which turned out to be a lot), which were fixed by the magician at my local bodyshop, instead of buying a new set of fairings.

Secondly the battery wasn't charging - I got the flickering dash the first time after taking it out for half an hour. New regulator rectifier, and new stator.

Bought decals for the left fairing that was removed for the repair. Wrong colours, so I've found another set from China.

Couple of days ago got an overheat when stationary problem - turns out the fan wasn't connected (hadn't appeared before, because it hadn't been warm enough here up North), so I've taken the fuel tank off, the air box, found the plug, reconnected it, and while I was there wired in a cigarette lighter and electric glove power supply to the battery (fused of course), so I can power the sat nav (attached onto a stalk attachment into the centre of the handlebars).

Then discovered that the coolant reservoir was empty - so far narrowed it down to a faulty cap, I've bought a new one of those, but have yet to test it.

Because while putting the fuel tank back on I discovered another common fault on Daytonas with plastic fuel connectors. Or at least I discovered it was common after my usual googling / youtube / forum research session. So I'm currently scraping out the plug, and have sourced a couple of sources for the metal fuel plugs.

I have learnt so much. And I still love this bike!

So hi people, I expect you'll be getting sick of my questions soon.

    Cheers

    Chris

Yo Chris, welcome aboard, don't worry bout buying the bike, yer sound like me, I told the guy I just bought my bike from I don't do pristine, it's the fettling like you are, that works for me, and boy I have I had to fettle wrong rear suspension, wrong progressive springs, wrong stand etc etc and on most recent bike battery terminals, bodged battery connection, new brake pads, belt tension etc etc. Dog and cat hav'n't been home lately.... Missus still here though..

welcome. Been there done that, guess most of us in here have at some time or another. I started riding (properly) on a bsa starfire 250 in 1975. Everyone in the shop was trying to sell me a Kwacker or a Honda but no,I had to have a Brit bike,no Jap crap for me. Well I certainly learnt a bit about spannering, lol.
Enjoy the bike,I am sure you will have plenty of fun. Ride safe.

HI Chris and welcome to the forum.

I take it that it is a Daytona 600 0r 650 by the description.
With regards to the Cat D have you checked that your insurance company is aware as some companies will not insure these bikes and it is all ways best if they know as if the worst comes to the worst and you have an off the last thing you want is not to be insured and ending up with points on your license for no insurance and no bike :frown:

With regards to the bike itself what sort of service history have you got with the bike (although by the sound of it I wouldn't trust the salesman's word as he sounds like a bit of a Arthur Dailey ) Might be best to check the valve clearances as these tend to tighten up after a while.

If you can possibly find out the bikes history that is also helpful and even make contact with the previous keeper to find out exactly what happened so at least you have an idea of what other problems you might encounter.

    Cheers

    Steve
