Hello all I'm considering a change of bike and fancy a speedmaster. I've been looking at a few on the net but not in the flesh so far. Do any of you have any words of wisdom or advice on choices. So far I like the look of the black with white inserts and think as many fitted extras will be cheaper than buying later. Anyway hello all any advice welcome.

Hi Andy, welcome to the asylum. No snags with a Speedmaster, had one for just over a year. Mines an 07 865cc carbs model, you know those things that mix petrol and air, I'm old school and prefer something I can fettle when it goes Pete Tong rather all this electronics that you leave you fcked up and far away from home;)

Thanks for all of your replies. Jez's bike looks nice but it's not really what I'm looking for. I prefer a more standard bike with a few extras such as a screen back rest etc, I've been looking on the net at 06 to 10 reg for upto £5k ish. From what I've read the efi one work well with no issues so that is looking favourite at the moment. I'll keep you posted.

If it's the same as the Bonneville then yes, secondary air injection was fitted to carb models. They changed to efi in 2008.

Quick easy way to pick an EFI over carb model is the TPS (throttle position sensor) Its the black plastic plate with a lead coming off it that is attached to the outside of the carby. on EFI's its on the left when sitting on the bike and on the right side on a carb model.

All I need to do now is find one and hopefully get on with the different riding position. I currently have a fazer 1000 so it's going to be different.
    Cheers

    Hi, and welcome.:D

Good luck on finding the right bike, plenty around. America is just the same bike and more likely to find one with all the extra's - screen, sissy bar , etc.

And blue one's are the nicest ;)

I'm unsure about the single disc on the America, I only hope that the twin discs on the speedmaster are ok as the brakes on my fazer are superb.

Think the later Speedmasters went to a single disk too, think 2010 / 2011 onwards they went to a single. Haven't ever felt lacking in the braking department with one front disk, even when carrying a pillion.

Not the kind of bike you go barreling into a corner and jam the brakes on. Most of the time I just use the engine and rear brake to settle it down before sweeping into a bend.

The two emergency stops i have done, it stopped well enough not for me to think about it.

Thanks for the info regarding the brakes. One of my reasons to change is I'm hopeing the more laid back cruising riding position will make me more willing to go steady, I'm not really that interested in going quickly but at the moment it's too easy if I'm not very restrained..it doesn't always work and big numbers for me anyway can sometimes be seen.

Me too, ended up doing silly speeds tooooo easily on a Gixxer 750. Tried track days but got bored going in circles, so it was time to take it easy. Can still hustle along on the America, but now 65~70 feels plenty quick and most of the time I am riding at legal speeds. Great bikes for just taking your time, enjoying the road and apreciating riding a bike.

Try get a bike with the short Triumph pipes (Triumph Off Road - or TOR's for short), sound sooooo much better.

Looks expensive for a 10 plate. Quick scan of Autotrader shows newer bikes with less miles for similar money. I only paid a few hundred more for a 13 plate with 1200 miles on the clock.

Looking on bike trader there is an America about 60miles from home. A blue one with a few extras. I might take a look when I get home. ...

mines a 14 plate less than 4k owes me just over 6k
since then it has short Tors, single seat, chrome rack pillion footrest eliminators etc
extras - double seat, rear sissy bar, back rest, rear rack, windshield, original leather panniers.
I would consider selling as dont get the chance or the time to ride it these days
