Travelling as I do over distance I have had an old Sat nav that I used the car type which worked fine however I thought time for a change so with OCD in place researched the shit out of them. Obviously Garmin and Tom Tom lead the way however also charge top price for what is in fact an ordinary Sat nav in a waterproof case that you can operate with sausage fingers. So I thought ok maybe I will just buy another car type and stick it in my tank bag but wait!!! I was told of apps that are basically the running system of these things free...yes free to download to my wonderful smartphone. After again research I decided that the "Here" sat nav app was the one as it came top of the list on many sites. I installed it and the maps of areas I travel through and a benefit for me is you can then use it offline so does not suck the data. I have now tried it for a month and it is a really great app, connects through my phone to my bluetooth and away I go..... However Please note and if anyone has info on this?
France does not allow sat navs with inbuilt speed camera locations pending a big fine if caught?. Also on a lot of sat navs the option to disarm this feature is not there, Tom Tom have got past this by giving approximate area warnings instead of precise. I will look deeper and contact the developers of the Here app... however I am sticking with it because To me its safer to know and I don't speed anyhoo so why should I be Targeted.
    Peace all \m/ \m/

Well here in France the issue seems to be a bit clouded. A company called Coyoté (gps) is popular over here and they got around showing camera locations by referring to 'zones of danger' which surprise surprise coincide with, yes you guessed it, the locations of fixed cameras.

Also, if there is no 'radar detector' built into your device then there should be no issue. TBH I think that with the advent of smartphones and GPS apps "Les Poulets" no longer show any interest - so long of course that you are not speeding ;);)

On an update The developers at "Here nav app" have informed me they do not support speed camera detection in their app. However I have informed them that it told me of cameras here in uk where it is Legal. Handy though because they are based in Deutschland my 3rd language. So Alles klar... will keep you updated but really a fantastic app and free :)

I wonder if the important word here is "detection". I said above it used to be that some of the GPS dedicated devices sold here also had radar detectors built-in, but that was illegal in France.

This is not the same as showing the location of a specific item - a radar camera for example - on a map.

Aaaaaah so there's an air of practicality as well - maybe, maybe not; but certainly more tempting.

    Hi
I use my smart phone with the TOMTOM app it cost £50. But again like you app all the maps including the Europe maps are stored on the phone so there is no data being used ,it's been a very worth while purchase
I use my phone with my twistyride case which is water proof and leads so keeps the phone charged

I've decided to go down the iPhone & app route too but can't seem to find any decent cases for my iPhone 6 plus.

Anyone else had the same problem and found a decent option?

I use a Garmin Zumo 340 and iirc Garmin supplied a software update allowing the speed camera mapping to be switched off. I've no idea how the police would know unless they were experts in all types of sat-navs and apps.

Like all laws some are in the background however still there, my app doesn't support the cameras so I am happy I do not have to arse around now. Actually there is a law in this city that if a Welsh man is found within the city walls after midnight He can be shot with an arrow.. absalute true... and guess what ..I'm Welsh..... Oo... what was that flew past my ear ;)

After a lot of gagging about with apps, I went and bought a Tomtom Rider.

The problem with the iPhone is that the apps aren't always stable, and re-booting a phone while riding wasn't something I was enjoying having to do.

Also the Tomtom comes with free lifetime maps, dedicated planning software, a decent mount and easy power connection. It also means I can leave my £600 iPhone in my pocket where I prefer it to be.
