Another little waypoint of WWII passing out of living memory. While l don't have personal memory of the war, my father and grandfather did. l feel like l'm part of the last generation to whom it has any meaning, really. My sons are decent enough blokes but they have a very different perspective on this to me. l'm sure there are others on here who could say the same....

When one thinks about what the vapid 21-year-olds are into today, one can only be in awe of what these young men and women did for us. True, there are good youngsters in our respective militaries today, but in that day, so many more enthusiastically answered the call. Bless him and those who went before him.

My father was a paratrooper. 82nd Airborne. On June 6, 1944, at age 19, he jumped out of an airplane, into the dark, over enemy territory.

Now and then, when I am having a bad day I pick up my grandfathers RAF log book and see what he was up to on that day in history. Certainly puts things into perspective.

With the current social media driven geopolitics, I wonder if we would have the ability to sacrifice time and opinions enough to come together in the way that their generation did.
