This evening I had my first near miss SMIDSY since returning to bikes. I had just turned left and about 20m on there was a car that started creeping forwards out of a road joining from the right, for all the world looked like they had seen me and stopped, but then carried on, I stopped within inches and let out a "f@%ing hell', they carried on and there was me stopped in the middle of the road gathering my wits, all low speed, but a good reminder not to take the rights of way for granted. I normally look for eye contact but the light was reflecting off the windows of the car so I couldn't see their face. It was dusk and I suspect that was part of the reason.
Notso Great you stopped in time. And are here to tell us. You must have a guardian angel. But these numb scull's really do boil my blood. Regards Joe.
As you say the light was reflecting off their windows, could be that they were being dazzled by the sun low in the sky, hence why they were creeping out? Glad you avoided them, and a reminder to not take anyone else's actions for granted.
Treat every other driver as an idiot and expect them to do the most stupid things so then your not surprised when they do.
Yup a reminder to us all. Too much trouble or never crossed their mind to roll down a window and listen. Glad all you got was shook up.
Has this happened to anyone else? You see a car edging out of a sideroad or filling station forecourt. They creep forward to make sure you see them and wait until you start slowing down and then pull out. They then apologise with a hand wave and signal you to pass them. Happened twice now - tossers!
Good on ya for stopping and not dropping skills. I was taught early on and it seems to work, look at the front wheels of the car -for some reason our brains can detect the rotation of the wheel quicker than the movement of the entire car. Edit: Forgot to add, please educate me on SMIDSY.
Ah, thanks. As a former LEO I never heard "sorry" from a cager, just "I didn't see him/it/her . . ." whether it was a bike or a dump truck that's the #1 excuse. The truth is usually "I'm just an a*shole that pulls out in front of people".
