Hi, from Friday evening until Monday morning i somehow left the ignition switched on on my R reg 900 Trident. Does anyone know if this could damage something in the electrical system. It could of course be coincidental but now i have a problem with the engine instantly cutting out. after a while it will start again ,only to die again 1/2 a mile later. Fuel problems have been ruled out. many thanks

over looking the fuel system as you state thats ok
Is the Battery ok ? is it charging ok ?
If the battery is ok and is charging ok then I would try this -
Daft as this may read I would try disconnecting the battery leads overnight and reconnect it in the morning and see how things go.

get your battery on a full charge over night, then ride it and see what happens

Agree with the above - always start with the battery.

may possibly be the crank position sensor failing. if it restarts after a few mins cooling down and then stops again it is a good bet. still think go simple stuff first tho. are you sure fuel system is def ok??,try running the bike on prime setting on fuel tap, vacuum may be blocked
