As per the title. Do the 1200cc Speedmasters use the canbus electrical system?

I'm looking into buying an Optimate charger and there are several different types. I may well be buying a 1200 Speedmaster in the future wish to 'future proof' the Optimate purchase by buying one which can also be used on a canbus system.

Or, can I use an Optimate connected to the battery and charge direct to the battery?

My current 865 Speedmaster doesn't have canbus.

    Thanks...

The Optimate 4 gives you canbus and non-canbus options.

Many thanks for the reply, much appreciated.

I've been looking at Optimate 4 on the SportsBikeShop website where there's quite a few different models of Optimates to choose from.

Can anyone confirm that the 1200 Speedmasters have the canbus system?

I'm assuming that Optimate can be charge direct to the battery on either a canbus or non-canbus system.....

With not owning a bike with canbus (yet) I'm not sure what it's all about and if there's any implications for battery charging / maintenance.

I believe that the Speedmasters, like my T120, run a CAN-BUS system, but not in a way that is relevant to battery charging.
BMW do shut down the DIN socket used for a battery charger unless you're using a BMW or Optimate Can-Bus compatible charger.
I have a DIN socket - but you can also use an SAE socket or CTEK socket - plugged directly into the battery using a fused lead. I am using an ancient Optimate charger - which says a lot for their reliability.

    Thanks for the reply.
After looking into this further and watching several YouTube videos, I've found, as you've also stated, that the charger can be connected to the battery as per usual without the need to go through the canbus / din socket.
I've gone for an Optimate duo charger that caters for lead acid and will also charge lithium batteries should I need it in the future and I'll use direct to battery.
