Diesel Car Chiping/tuning Box?

Hi All,

got a round trip down to Italy and back soon and thinking of getting my car chipped for better economy, has anyone had any experience of these piggyback units?

Its a 2011 vw cc 2.0tdi dsg...i think its currently at 138-141 bhp.

Current mileage to a tank is around 48mpg

As usual it almost always comes from people who are prepared to quote what they've read. Not their actual experiences.

I had one of the piggyback boxes on a 2005 Citroën Picasso 2.0HDI. I did approx 10,000 miles before giving the car to my Father-in-law when I came into a bit of money. He did over 130,000 miles before eventually buying something newer.
The car never missed a beat & would return high 60's to the gallon on a run. When he sold the car. I removed the box & sold it for £40. The guy that bought it contacted me 3 months later to say he was delighted with the results.

The box was a CR TECH Bluespark. They are sold on Ebay for £79.99. The seller has over 7800 positive feedback at 100%.

You need to learn to ride the extra torque curve provided & change gear sooner. This will increase your mpg to what the box manufacturer claims. If you start nailing it everywhere & enjoying the extra bhp? Your fuel economy will be worse.

Thanks. This is exactly what i needed, also alot cheaper than the ones i have looked at. The only thing is mine is an automatic so changing depends on what revs im at and how hard I'm accelerating. Ill put an order in now and send feedback. Thanks again

I have no experience of that as all of ours have been manuals.

The boxes are adjustable but don't be tempted to select the highest setting. I find ours work best when set at just over half way (7 out of 10 as a maximum setting)

You wil get the best economy if you get up to your cruising speed. Then lift off the throttle until your barely touching it. Just enough to maintain your desired speed.

Here's a photo of the mpg readout from my 2.0TDCi Ford Kuga after a long run. As it's an SUV, it has the aerodynamic properties of a brick at hi speed. These figures were achieved on a very steady run at approx 65mph. You could probably get similar results at 75mph?

Sorry about the poor image quality but you should still be able to make out that it says 67mpg. As you can see, I got just over 170 miles on less than a 1/4 of a tank of fuel.

On that subject. Don't trust the mpg readout completely. Do a full tank to full tank check. The tuning boxes seem to make the fuel computer over read by 5%-10%?

I had a Freelander TD4 a while back and soon got fed up with it's lethargic performance. It was like a languid lesbian and couldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding. So I put one of Rover Ron's tuning boxes on it and it made a world of difference, especially when overtaking. As a bonus my fuel consumption dropped a noticeable amount too. sorry for the late reply, have been quite busy! just ordered today, they have a deal on £71.99!! will see how it goes for the next few days before I head off at the end of July.

Got some Wayns injector cleaner and seemed to have worked, engine feels smoother.

If the combination goes well I'll be doing the Golf too!

A skeptic (best mate) did work out that I would need to "save" 650 miles (which is one tank ordinarily) to pay for the outlay of injector cleaner and the chip.....

On another note, have been thinking about getting a fast car, but when you compare the figures, even to my 16 speed triple, your talking silly money. So now thinking to "pimp" the golf 2.0 tdi to something like this...

Interesting, but assuming this will be £5k plus?? thats the budget for a GTI or Type R at the moment.

Yes, I put a piggyback chip on my caddy 1.9tdi after buying one as a surprise for a friend,I tested it, he never got it!!

I had an MK Indy fitted with a Hayabusa motor. As 7 replica kit cars go MK's are up there with the best for quality. However, the end result does depend on how good the builder was?
My MK was rapid (Santa Pod trophy to prove) but my current R1 powered 3 wheeler would eat it alive. Mainly due to it weighing over 150kg less.

The guys advert bangs on about how light the car is. Ask him what it actually weighs & ask to see the weighbridge ticket as proof. My guess is it's much closer to 500kg than 400kg.

A carb fed Fireblade is an awesome bike but not as powerful as the injected models. Also, although that engine is damn near unburstable in the bike. A lot more is being asked of it in a heavy car.

Also, any bike engined 4 wheeler normally uses a chain to diff drive conversion. These add even more weight & can be problematic?
The fact it has been used on a track is either good coz it proves it's reliable. Or bad coz it's been hammered? Only you can decide which?

The performance will be mind boggling compared to 90% of cars. Certainly loads quicker than tarting up your VW Golf as you talked about doing earlier.
Nowhere near as practical though. You'd have to think of it as another summer toy like a bike.

Check out the prices of similar kit cars fitted with Hayabusa motors rather than old tech Blade motors. You'll see why the seller is saying his car is cheap.

I wouldn't buy it but I wouldn't put you off buying it Moe. Go for a look & a passenger ride. You might fall in love?

Just looking around, good to get an opinion from someone whos had one.

The trike is the nuts but over budget, something like this seems cheaper, but as you say no where near the trike...keep looking.

The golf is the wifes car, so doubt she will want that treatment.

received the tuning box today, first impressions are that yes it has increased torque (longer wheel spin!)

it seems to sit in a higher gear being an auto but still changes down when accelerating... when cruising at a steady speed say 40mph it sits in 6th gear but the instant mpg read out shows it not performing that well...knock it down to 4th and the instant mpg goes up?

think it needs a full tank run through to see what actual miles i get from a tank.

I had my Mondeo chipped from 150 bhp to 180, and from 310 Nm to 420. Was very pleased!!!

As you've read through this tread you've seen my experiences with diesel tuning boxes.

99% of the time I enjoy the extra torque/mpg. However, very occasionally the extra bhp comes in handy.

Since contributing to this thread. I've discovered that a mate who's been a tech at a Ford main dealer for nearly 40yrs. Uses a diesel tuning box on his 2007 2.0 TDCi S-Max. Apparently every tech at his place with a diesel car uses one.

I was going to query the price, the £150 is for a tech II variant

Just ordered the cheapo version for my Pug 308 HDi, £80 quid well worth a punt, cheers DD. Will update in a couple of weeks or so, off on hols next week so no time to play.
