    Hi guys,

Looking at my options but love the look of the Daytona and have found one with a Speed Triple conversion and raised bars.

Currently getting used to a hire Cb500x hire bike (not long done A license) as my old 125 was trashed in an accident (not my fault).

Will this be too much power and suitable for short commutes for a fairly novice rider? Want a bike for short commutes but fun at the weekends.

    Thanks in advance.

    Yer I thought that.

Reading around a bit has made me paranoid and thought it might not be so forgiving for a newer rider especially one used to a 125 over the last year. I'm quickly getting used to the CB500 but this will be a big step up!

Wow great job and love the JD slogan am sipping on the good stuff now! Sadly I'm no mechanic even basic maintenance is a chore.

Yer I suppose you can get bogged down with all the practicalities of riding a motor bike. Once I adapted to my 125 I loved it and am getting used to this CB500. Although like you say wider bars on my 125 were a big bonus for stability.

I used to own a 2003 Daytona 955i. They are good bikes but there are certain things you need to look out for when purchasing.

Brilliant bikes. Avoid the early ones and go for 2002 onwards. Fully forged crank and pistons in the engine. Before the 675 came along by far and away the best engine triumph has made.

If you're not mechanically inclined, go for the standard swingarm version as well, it's stiffer, lighter and cheaper than the SSSA version

Common faults are the iacv hoses cracking (easy fix) electrical issues which are becoming more common and starter sprag clutches (not an easy fix).

The engine is great, they have a very flat power delivery so some don't like them as you don't really get the top end rush of a jap IL4, a great engine for the road though, they sound nice with a decent race can.

On the whole, very reliable bikes, Reg/rec can go as with many bikes of the era. Triumph specialist Clive Wood in Boston is a font of all knowledge on these bikes. He raced them with great success and would be happy to talk through their specifics.

They also are very easy to remap/tune with a copy of tuneecu.

Having said all the above known issues, the only issue I faced was the cracking of the plastic fuel connectors. It was an easy fix as I had to replace them with metal connectors. She was trouble free after that.

But as Dozers Dad said you might feel more confident and comfortable on an upright bike.

Thanks for your help. The one I'm looking at is late 2001 but believe this is the updated version. It has a good amount of history and less then 20k miles. Was negotiating on the price as felt £1400 was more realistic than the £1700 advertised. Can't upload a pic as says is too large.

Seems like a good find. It's not a biking season now, so you might possibly have an upper hand in negotiating the price down. Check chain sprockets' life, tyre life, look out for any rusted bits, ensure electrics are good, let engine run for a while and gently blip the throttle to ensure all good, check forks and rear suspension for any leaks. Try to stick to £1,400 - £1,450. The normal going rate (2001 model) is somewhere between £1,500 - £2,000 providing she is in a mint condition. All the best buddy

Cheers pal. The seems a decent bloke so that helps build confidence. He's offered a test ride with cash in hand which is fair enough. Thanks for the tips.

Gazza, with you being a relative newcomer to bikes and as you intimate not mechanically minded do you know anyone who has some bike experience who would go with you to view not only this bike, that's if you decide to view, but any other bike.

I'd also check the cost of your insurance before purchasing mate.
The bike has been modified and with you being a somewhat inexperienced rider insurance companies may want to load any quotes they give .

Cheers for the reply Tiglet, good thinking. Yes I'm in no way mechanically minded I'm not shy about admitting it!I'm trying to collar my mate to come with me who maintains his own bikes. He's done some good work on my vara in the past for me.

Checked with the seller and had a service last year or 80 miles ago as he doesn't use it. Yer insurance wasn't too bad just a big excess and voluntary excess. I'm over 30 so this has helped a bit.

I had the pleasure of owning/riding a 2002 Daytona 955i Centennial up until a few years ago. Now, I would not normally recommend such a powerful bike for a new rider, but, that engine, whilst being pretty powerful is also quite easy to tame. There is plenty (read 'lots') of power available throughout the rev range which makes it very predictable - it just gets up and goes with no sudden power bands, which makes it very easy and smooth to ride. If in doubt, change up early (short shifting) when accelerating until you get the feel of it. You'll still be leaving almost everything else floundering in your wake. Surprisingly mine would pull from around 2,500rpm in 5th or 6th gear two up with no problem, although a gentle hand was advisable, but it does show how manageable it is. It will also blow away (two up again) Subaru Imprezzas from the lights with ease should the need arise ... fnaar, fnaar!:p
As the late, great Mike Hailwood would say 'the throttle works both ways'.
The torque, power, smoothness and howl of that engine makes it a real gem.
    Enjoy! I know I did!!:):)

Cheers Steve I'm getting more tempted by the post to get the bike! I've got that short shifting habit ingrained from my 125 as you'd be at 10k rpm before you know it! Don't encourage me about the Imprezzas there's enough morons on the road around here that need a lesson! I've been warned off on other forums getting such a powerful bike but what you're saying makes perfect sense.

R_1000 offered some great advice about about retuning /mapping, suppose if I struggled with the commute aspect this could be an option?
