Hi Just a quick one I'm new to the speedy having jap bikes most of my life but just noticed when riding today , when its on idle if you blip the throttle quickly it coughs like its over fueling or is it just me.. oops forgot to mention bike is standard
not sure about that Kevin, i've got the Arrow cans on though, somebody running the standard cans would know..by the way i clicked on your location Newport thinking it was Newport in Fife, but it's coming up as Newport in America!
ah yes putting south wales in makes a differance! you will know Bevan m/cycles in Cardif then,i got my speed triple from them
Could well be an air leak in the exhaust. I had this on a VFR some years ago, which was cured by resealing with domestic silicone sealant. Lasted for years like that.
Hi Kevin, welcome. Have you bought the bike recently second hand? Just wondering whether previous owner might have had Arrow cans and put standard ones back on to trade in, so might still have the wrong (Arrow) map loaded on the ECU.
Hi col_c i was just wondering the same thing ill pop over to bevans in Cardiff for them to check map.
Yeah, not my nearest dealer but bought a few Triumph accessories from them, talking to them on the phone they seem to be on the ball. I you're interested you can read which map is loaded yourself using some free software and a cable (£15 approx). More info starts here and here.
Hi Col_c just bought a cable to read what map i have on the speedy and it came with the tunecu software.
Hi Kev, I'd be cautious of any software you get with the cable. The guys at TuneEcu make a big deal (rightly so) that their software is free but shouldn't be available anywhere else. Have a good read on their site about the drivers you need to install on your laptop to make the cable work. Drivers supplied with cables are often wrong for use with TuneEcu. Get that bit right and the rest is plain sailing. Recently changed my map for the Arrow cans and also balanced the throttle bodies via TuneEcu, no problems. If you ever need to change the map take note of the IMPORTANT instructions to pull fuse for lights and also connecting car battery. If voltage drops too low the upload will fail, there's recovery available but you don't want to go there. Map upload is the only operation you need to take those precautions and has any risk (IMO). Reading map number, error codes etc etc is all dead easy.
Hi Lads managed to read map on speedy its a standard map 20484 carbs balanced very close, but still now and again i seem to get a complete miss fire not popping on over run, changed plugs air filter this only happens when i blip the throttle like i said not all the time, strange it literally frightened the guy next to me.
Hi Kevin, please confirm your SpeedIII is NON ABS and within the VIN numbers #461332 to #537880, with standard exhaust (and air filter). If your VIN number is outside that range you need a different map. If yours is in that range then the current map you have loaded is close..... but no cigar. That map is for 91RON fuel, in the UK you would be better running a map for 95RON (map 20483 if the above is correct), there's probably not much difference in the maps but might be worth a try. Also did you check for any error codes while you had TuneECU connected?
Hi Col_c, vin in the range and speedIII non ABS standard exhaust and air filter i will try map 20483. and no error codes many thanks kev
Just be careful to follow the previous warnings to ensure you keep the voltage up while you're doing the remap. Do you know any of the bikes history? If it's had different exhaust and reverted back to standard it might be worth checking the SAI valve is not still disabled either physically or by map (there's a tick box in TuneECU). Less likely but O2 sensor can also be disabled. Both should be active as standard (boxes ticked in TuneECU). TuneECU also tells you how many times the ECU has been remapped, so will give you an indication of it's history. As your current map isn't the UK standard I'm guessing it may have been modded and brought back to standard... but may be not fully/correctly.
Hi Guys, remapped this morning all well that must have been the most nerve racking few minutes, speedy runs much better on 20843 map many thanks Col_c...
Hi Ive just been out for a 30 mile ride what a difference smoother ave fuel consumption well up and doesnt smell so much now,,,, and hardly any popping
Hi Kev, glad it sorted the problem. Must say I'm slightly surprised it made so much difference as the previous map was almost there, just for lower octane fuel. Remapping would also force the ecu to run an adaptive reset, so that would also improve the bike setup and may well have a lot to do with the improvement. If you feel it 'go off' in the future you can run a reset without the need for remapping. It can be activated in TuneECU or will do it by leaving the bike on sidestand, start bike without touching throttle and leave to run for about 10 minutes. I prefer the TuneECU method as it gives a confirmation when completed. Have fun, go wrong it's neck now.
