im getting a Haynes but until next week how the hell do I read the level of coolant? (2005 1050)

It looks like it's really low and barely any in the reservoir.

I've not got a visible leak so do I top it up, flush it, change it?

Also it looks blue in the tank so a good colour.

Oil temp gauge is constantly in the middle but my fan does come on quite a lot.

    Is this normal?

I'd always flush through and add fresh on a new second hand bike, you then know what you've got. Last thing you need is a frozen radiator! Should be full up to the cap but will fall back slightly as it cools. Expansion bottle should be between the marks, I fill to the top mark when renewing but it will lose some when it gets proper hot, don't bother topping up (unless you're still getting the air out), it will find its own level. As long as it stays between the marks it's fine.
The fan will come on in traffic etc., a shade more so if you have a radiator guard fitted.
I think you'll find temperature gauge is for water (not oil).

Hi Pete, On my Speed Triple, the temp guage sits at 5 bars of 8, the fan come on a lot and this is normal.
In traffic, the bar will go to 6 but then drop later
I have used TuneECU to reduce the temp that the fan kick in at to around 97c.
The coolant still boils at 100c so why wait till it is there or above before the fan kicks in :)

Clear blue coolant is good. It will be lower in the expansion tank when the engine is cold. As said, it is always good practice to empty the coolant out, flush it through with a hose pipe and replace it when you get a second hand bike so you know what you have got. Same for the oil, change filter and oil for top quality fully synthetic stuff, I am almost on 40k miles and the valves dont need adjusting yet. I change it every 7-8k miles

On the early 1050's the bike will find it's happy level, which is somewhere around the low mark. If you fill above that it will spew it out when hot. If you can see a little in the bottom of the tank, it should be OK.
