Has anybody had the operation done to cure this?

Mine has steadily got worse... Ten minutes and my throttle hand is numb nowadays. It goes quick enough, take the hand off and give it a jiggle about and it eases. Not ideal.

I've been putting it off, the consultant told me it would be three weeks with no driving, let alone riding, so of course, I left it. Now it needs done... Left hand is going too now.

What can I expect? Is it actually going to work?

Sorry to hear it and really don't know if it helps to get an op or not. My sister in law had it done couple of weeks ago and is back driving already so must do something. The ride by wire bikes have a real gentle throttle so I find they are no effort at all Wish you all the best and hope it all turns out good for you.
    Regards
    Joe.

Was worried I may need to have it done but I have swapped to a marble/trackman mouse while at work and it has eased off to near enough nothing. Jolly lucky.

Thanks for the answers so far guys. It's been getting steadily worse for the last couple of years. Does when sitting still, driving, riding... I was doing a lot of driving when I had it first diagnosed, doc just offered the op there and then, but the time without driving would have been impossible...

So now it's worse, I'm just hoping I haven't left it too late. Problem I'm seeing at the moment is the hospital is a 200 mile round trip, no buses here... Might have to fork for the train, if the timing works out right (train times here are erratic to say the least!). Wouldn't be so bad if it could be done up in Wick, but it's likely to be Inverness.

Still from what you guys, are saying, it sounds promising.....

My dad had it done donkeys ago, but it left one of his fingers useless and permanently along his palm!! but the pain was gone.

Guess it must be a better op now?

Shall be seeing the M.O. on Monday, going to ask for a re-referral... My second finger on my right hand is pretty stiff with arthritis too, doubt it will help that, but if it removes some of the discomfort all well and good.

@David Cooper yup... Bite the bullet I guess. My dad would have said the same.

My wife had the operation on one wrist 2 or 3 years ago. It used to drive her mad before the op. She would have pins and needles and numbness in her wrist, hand and fingers just sitting in a chair doing nothing.

The consultant asked her to wear one of those brace things for a couple of months first to see if that eased the symptoms. It didnt so he agreed to operate. Total success. No pain, tingling or numbness at all in her wrist/hand post op and ever since. We had an automatic car at the time so she was driving in a few days ( still strapped up ).

My wife's sister needed the op on both wrists some years ago. Total success for her too.

Get yourself booked in for the op Sandy.

    I think I'm convinced.

    Thanks @Johnjo that's reassuring.

Might be a while without driving for me, as my daily is a 1982 Series 3 Land Rover... Just going to have to be chauffeured :)

Yes, go for it mate. You will have the inconvenience of being strapped up for a few days. But weigh that against being pain free afterwards. Like most ops and procedures these days techniques and success rates are constantly improving.

Just wish they could do the same for arthritis too. My knuckles on one hand are buggered with it. Thankfully I can still make enough of a fist for my throttle and to hold a golf club. Not sure for how much longer though.

Ps. Don't think my Missus would have managed your series 3 after her op. She had the luxury of an auto X3.:)

Right enough... Similar problems, fingers don't quite fit right any more. Left hand sounds like dry twigs cracking when I curl my fingers...

Getting old doesn't come alone. And here I am just left 25.....(though I started counting backwards about 15 years ago.... .)

    Hi, Big Sandy,

I have had this carpal tunnel problem in my left hand intermittently for a number of years. It bothers me more when I ride my bicycle than anything else. Not as much on the motorcycle, thank goodness. I have a very good friend who's a shoulder / elbow / hand surgeon. He's probably the best one in town and isn't quick to operate like many surgeons are. He always starts with the least invasive solution possible. Anyway, I saw him awhile back for my carpal tunnel and he recommended starting with a steroid injection. He had carpal tunnel (I'm sure from operating on people with carpal tunnel!) and went with this treatment himself. I've had near total relief for a few years now. It's starting up again but he said that if that happened and if the first shot helped a lot (it did!) then we'd do another shot. He's a great surgeon but his motto is to only have surgery if you really need it. Has your doc talked about a steroid injection as a an option--at least to start with? Have you gotten a second opinion? Oh, my other question for you is did your surgeon discuss doing an "open" carpal tunnel surgery vs. doing an arthroscopic surgical procedure? If not, I'd suggest you ask about that, too. Good luck!!!

@Sandi T. No, this guy is slice and dice, I asked about other options but according to him there is his way or the high way. That's what put me off originally.
It was open it up surgery too.

There isn't another consultant unless I go private, and I can't afford that, so I'm kind of stymied. (and, guess who the private consultant is....)

This is why I have put up with it for the last 5 years or so, but it's reached the point where I cannot ignore it any more, Dammit. Just going to have to bite the bullet.

I had a cyst removed from my left wrist about 2 weeks ago and am still in recovery. I thought I was suffering from Carpal , but a short visit to local clinic corrected this. I had surgery to remove. My Dr. told me that the cyst had rearranged my veins and such, but he was able to repair this. In fact I am going back to work today. I was totally one handed, because of the brace for a week, but that was a small price to pay. I know these problems are not the same, but do seem to be very similar. I'd go for the surgery, rather risk total/permanent loss of use! Good luck. And I am playing by guitar again.

did you ever get any easing with anti inflammatory meds in the early days?

only wonder if the flexor tendons are swelling or if the carpal tunnel has narrowed....

I get pain in my thumb on the right hand after gripping the throttle. I think mine is just arthritis but it did get to be a nuisance when doing my Arctic Trip. To ease the pain I put my thumb on the top of the throttle which helped for a while, but eventually I had to put it back underneath again.
It’s a right bugger getting old isn’t it.

    That's cool!

I have a lump on the wrist too, the M.O. said it was a 'bursa', there's one on my left elbow too. Was told to ignore it, it'll go away. It hasn't.

@Judd Dredd no, anti inflammatory drugs have made no difference... I've been using nsaid's for years for another problem. Thisyere consultant said, "I'll sort the right one, and in two years time you'll be back for me to do the left one." I thought then, "don't bet on it matey", but yeah, going to have to get it done. I'm afraid I don't have masses of faith in the medical profession... I had an operation in my early 20's, "Oh, don't worry, you'll not have a scar". Naaah... Just a 9 inch gash in my chest and a hole you can fit your hand in.. No scar my arse.

Godz! Sound like frelling wreck, don't I? Lol.

But... When you stop and think about it, it's amazing just how much we just put up with, even if you visited the medico's, invariably it's "have a tablet, jog on".

I'll let you's know what transpires anyhoo :)
Like I say, I'm only 25*. Give or take 30 years....

*on the inside of my mind... :)

Well, sh*t, Big Sandy. That sucks. I didn't mention in my previous post but my ex-husband is also a shoulder, elbow, hand surgeon and from your description of your doc it sounds like my ex could even be your guy. :scream: But only if your doc is on a 10-year probation for schtuping a patient. Another story..... Suffice it to say I'm glad my ex is an EX!.

Is there any way you can get to a different referring person who may have a different referral pipeline? Or is this guy the only one on everyone's list? Well, hope you get this addressed somehow or other. It really does suck to not have choice--that's just not right. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for you that you get this fixed one way or another.
