Hi, I changed the handlebars on my thunderbird 900 from the standard to the much lower thunderbird sport bars. Seemed reasonably straightforward and the bike looks great with the lower bars , problem arose when I went to take her a test run with the new bars . On starting the bike ( which was running fine beforehand )the engine is racing at about 4000 rpm with choke off so switched off and checked cables which don't seem to be sticking or caught up anywhere. Won't have time to look again till off work on Thursday , hopefully not raining as I don't have garage. When I bought the new bars the seller did suggest I would need shorter choke and throttle cables . Has anyone had this problem and got around it , any advice appreciated cheers Bob.

Sounds to me as though you've got a sharpish bend in your cable which is putting excess pressure on the inner cable against the sleeve. They need as direct a route as possible so if you have a longer cable it's got to bend a bit more

I have had to cable tie my throttle cable in a position where it doesnt foul up now and again on my Sprint. Had to experiment a bit first but not difficult.
DD's advice as always is good,if fitted, check your bar end weight isnt holding the throttle open

Had a quick look at the bike and noticed the choke cable wasn't returning home at the carb end by about 1/4 inch and the throttle cable was catching on the headlight bracket , rather than re routing I think for better throttle response and safety sake I'll order shorter cables as recommended by sprint engineering, seems genuine enough seller. I'm new too tinkering with bikes so hope the fitting of them doesn't turn into a major headache ,haha, got the Haynes manual handy! Thanks for all advice and suggestions.

Lol no worries, I use Sprint a lot myself. He would say to buy new cables tho, as it is a sale. I am gonna tell you that it is a pain changing the cables tho, it is a carbs out job and it is very awkward as well, not much room to play. That is why I didnt bother.
On the Sprint you can pull and push the choke manually if the cable goes, just reach under the tank for the small lever and hey ho. All the best anyway

. Thanks Dave , Had a look at the Haynes manual and you're right mate does seem a bit of a burger! Getting Good weather to coincide with my days of and not having grandkids round is also a big ask for me too ! When I do get round to it may as well replace the air filter as well, happy days !! Cheers Bob.

Could you cut the cable to shorten it and (I know I'm leaving myself open here!!)...re-nipple it

Just a wee update on this . I think Crispey hit the nail on the head with his first reply , the inner cable fouling on the outer cable because of too sharp a bend due to the cable being too long . I was recommended to try a cable from the Daytona from the wemoto website owners , that was too short . Went back onto sprint manufacturing where he lists the lengths of the various triumph cables and decided to go for the tt600 / speed four cable which was in between the other two in length , that was ideal and works a treat . Thanks to everyone for the input .
