Hi - I have a 2001 Bonnie with 12k on the clock. Now I don't know if it is normal but when I am decelerating I there is a pretty loud whine which seems to be coming from the transmission. I had not really taken much notice of it (I used to have a Virago which was much the same) but when my Son bought his 2004 Bonnie Black (20K) I realised how quiet his was, even the engine is on his is pretty quiet against mine which tends to whirr, whirr a lot.

So I am wondering, is this an inherent early model 2001 thing, is my Sons bike an exception to the norm for Bonnies or do I have a problem?

Any thoughts or info gratefully received

    thanks

    Trev

All of the Hinckley Triumphs have their trademark noise. Both my 93 Daytona as well as my 2011 Speed Triple had it but it is very hard to gauge without actually hearing it.

Does it sound metallic and are you having issues when changing gear?

I have only ridden a Bonnie a couple of times and that was a while ago so trying to remember what they sounded like.

    Hi Steve

    Thanks for responding.

There are no gear change issues. I guess it does sound a bit metallic - like a worn bearing sound in the final drive.

Seems strange though on a bike of such low mileage.

I had a Virago 535 which was similar but when I asked my local bike guy to check it he reckoned that that was par for the course for the Yammy.

It is mainly there when I change down and decelerate - maybe its quite normal but its weird that my Son's 2004 Bonnie is so much quieter.

    Thanks

    Trevor

I dont know anything about a Bonnie but on Sprints, the original front sprocket has a rubber collar on and when it is changed for a non standard one, you get a whine sound. Not saying it is the same but have you checked the sprockets and locating nuts, and the drive chain is adjusted and lubed correctly. Are there tight spots, is it dry?? Just a couple of ideas to try first, maybe nothing to do with the problem but worth a look.

What Steve says about Hinckley Triumphs is so true, some, like mine, are really agricultural, you can sure hear mine ticking over, lol. Still runs nicely though and at least I know the engine is run in, though it has done 43000 miles.

    Hi Sprintdave

I will check out the points you raised thanks.

I did change the original engine covers for nice shiney chrome ones and the sprocket cover on the original does have a rubber dampner. The same thought crossed my mind so I replaced it but makes no difference. The engine has the usual Bonnie whirl-whirl noise which is usual and it goes really well especially since I removed the Secondary Air system crap and bought a carb balancer to set up the carbs (what a difference both these exercises make!).

So I guess I will put up and shut up with the tranny noise and assume its a 'Bonnie thing'.

Maybe if it gets worse I will have a strip down and check it out but for now its not really a problem just a bit annoying.

Thanks you all your help guys
