Bonneville Rear Shocks, Grease Or Not?

I'm just replacing the rear shocks on my Bonneville, and the Haynes manual says to grease the shock bushes and mounts, however after removing the original shocks it is obvious there has not been any grease previously.

Can anyone please clarify if grease should be applied or not?
