I see from the press that some tw*t is trying to ban over 70-year olds from driving.

I realise that most members on here are under that particular threshold, but at 65 this worries me a lot, especially as I've just bought a new Bonnie and intend keeping it for quite some time !

Of course there are some older people who really shouldn't be behind the wheel but I would have thought that 70 is too low nowadays (after all, some people will still be working at that age) - the thought of being unable to ride in a few years time fills me with horror - I might have to emigrate !

I reckon there's more accidents caused by under-25's actually - do you think they'd try and ban them as well - fat chance!

Hopefully it won't come to anything, but us oldies are a soft target and I don't trust the politicians not to go for us to show they care about "reducing accidents".

Which cnut is that ? Don't think it'll happen, there are too many grey voters these days for that. WE HAVE THE POWER
    WHHHHEEEEEEE !!!!!!!!!!!
And like you say most accidents are caused by "young tearaways" that's why their insurance premiums are so high. Ban young drivers, that's what I say.
Actually being serious I think there's a very good case for limiting the power of cars that young people can drive. I see too many idiots driving powerful cars at stupid speeds. I would suggest a 75 bhp limit on cars for under 30 year olds.

Indeed Andy - further research seems to indicate it's not a politician behind this; rather it seems to be a road-safety charity called Brake, plus a Telegraph journalist whose 80'odd year old mum had an accident in a Micra and couldn't remember what happened......
Seems that an outright ban isn't being called for, but a compulsory re-test at 70 as opposed to a self-certifying statement.
    Hopefully it'll just go away.

To be honest, some type of re-test could be a good thing for some older divers and around my patch those 18-25 feckers who just passed. I like many others who are approaching the twilight years could possible do with a 'sharpener' just to sort out any bad habits or as a refresher. Myself I'm an IAM Driver (25 years) and I've dozens of check drives either for my former employer and the UK military so I could drive for the role. Each time I did the check drives I got Pass + so I class my driving, and riding, as pretty damn good, but, I would accept a check drive and if required re-training if I was below standard. As for riding, my 'teacher' was my ex-bike plod mate who was the senior trainer/assessor for our local force, he didn't take any $#!t mate or not so I'm pretty well up on two wheels as well as four.

As NewT120 says, BRAKE is just a charity campaigning for road safety and justice for victims of road deaths - been around since 1995 and whilst they obviously do some good work (supporting victims families) it seems as if their main aim is to prevent road deaths at any cost. This results in some rather silly campaigns to achieve this but no one appears to take much notice of them.

Age related Insurance costs proves who are the accident prone culprits, what I cant understand is how the youngsters can afford the cost to insure these Audi A3, Ford Whatevertheyarecalledtoday (a lot easier calling them Escorts etc), we have a public football field opposite us and I'm amazed what they turn up in!
What worries me is have they declared the modifications, bloody great dustbin hanging off the back for a 'silencer' which it aint, looks like no springs they are so low, wide wheels, they keep Demon Tweeks in business!
The standard of driving leaves a LOT to be desired, o.k. I know I was young once, I did have wide wheels on my 100e and Mk1 Cortina, but nothing like the power these cars have!
Never got me the Escort Mexico or Lotus Cortina I wanted, probably the best car's I never had, because I was priced out of the insurance!
    Bitter???? No, not me!
