2020 speedy RS - 4000 miles on the clock
Oil changed about 300 miles ago with motul 10/40 (same stuff I’ve used the entire time I’ve owned it) oil level is good.

went for a ride yesterday, came home after doing about 30 miles and could hear a clattering noise coming from what sounds like the CCT area. I’ve done a bit of poking around and the responses seem to be

    Change to Castrol

CCT is “stuck” between teeth and just ride it as is until it fixes its self

“unstick” the CCT - curious how this is done if it’s based off oil pressure

replace it with a new one

4000 miles seems a bit early for the CCT to go out. So I suppose the question is where to start? Fresh oil? Attempt to unstick CCT? Just buy a new one once I find a part number?

also looked on APE’s site and didn’t see any manual ones for the speed triple.

I've found 675 and 765 can rattle their camchain if left for a while on their sidestand (opposite side to tensioner).

Presumably the oil drains away and the chain initially rattles but it does go away after a minutes running.

Does your continously make a noise or just the first minute after starting?

Resetting the tensioner is easy but it needs removing and doing on the bench, then reinstalling.

Motul is good stuff, and Castrol is not some wonder fluid, so I wouldn't worry about the oil until the miles are up.

My initial thought was that the oil had just drained out of it, unfortunately it’s happening while the bike is running and up to temp. It lessens in neutral and gets louder when put in gear. Tapping also gets faster with rpm increase.

I’m not opposed to resetting it on a bench if someone has a write up for it.
Also curious if switching to 10-50 would help.

10/40 to 10/50 would be less pressure as it's less viscous.
If you did change to Castrol then that would eliminate one option but I'd stick with 10/40.

ah, good point. I'll stick with 10/40. I'm leaning away from it being an oil issue, I've used motul 10/40 in it since the first oil change and have had no issues. Curious why the cct would jump ship at 4k miles.

Is there a proper way to lock the cams / chain in place so I can remove the cct? From what I've seen online its the "jam something between the case and the cam chain runner" and I'd like to avoid that if possible

    Yes there is.
I had to helicoil the casting as someone had stripped one of the x2 M6 bolts on a 675. Take off the rhs crank cover and cable tie a socket into the left hand corner.

Nothing "forced" anywhere as you just pick the socket diameter to snuggly fit before cct removal.

You might need a new gasket.

Check out the posting 'Question About Oil Change'. It's an old posting started in August 2021 but recently resurrected with further information. Last month (February 2025) I added information on how to strip the hydraulic cam chain tensioner if you decide to do so.

Welp now I’m confused. went out and started it today, and there is zero noise from the cam chain or the tensioner. Let it get up to temp and still nothing. I was unaware self healing cam chain tensioners were a thing :joy:

took it around the block and I can still faintly hear the cam chain but not like it was before. Thoughts?
