I came across this today when I was cleaning the Speed Triple. The harness that runs to the ignition switch has split open. I'v been to my local dealer he took some photos and said when the service guy gets back from Ibiza in two weeks time he will send them to Triumph (happy days). Any one else came across this before, it's a 2011 model camera 026.jpg camera 027.jpg camera 028.jpg camera 029.jpg

Not personally seen this before and got nothing like it on my 2012 Speed Triple. Its almost like the wires have been pulled too tight and then rubbed through or been trapped. Just a thought, has a previous owner had higher bars fitted previously?

Can you see any of the cables rubbing or being trapped when you turn lock to lock?

If the cables inside are not damaged I think I would get some new protection sheathing or tape over the damaged areas.

Nope, I had a 2011 and never had any issues like that with mine.

Have you still got the lugs that stop the the handlebars going too far on the headstock as if either of them are damaged then the bike has been dropped and it may have pulled the the wires too far and damaged them that way.

    Just worth looking

Morning every one, All the lock stops are ok and it's never been dropped. What's happening is on Right hand lock the cable is bending at the places the cracks have appeared, I'v uploaded some photo's of it on full lock, (had to tape it up for now) The bikes 3 years old now so any one with a 2011/12 Speedy might want to keep an eye on it. Dont know what Triumphs going to do, It's out of warranty but still not a lot of miles on it, also if they replace the cable it's the ignition switch so they would have to replace the seat lock, petrol cap and the ecu because of the chip in the key. If it's left as is I think it's going to cause a few problems (Water getting in dirt etc).

As far as out of warranty claims go Triumph are reasonably good.
They replaced the headlight lenses on my 2011 twice without any problem, so I'm sure they will have a look at it.

If you don't ask then you will never get

True SteveJ, I'v had the headlights replaced just out of warranty cos the Dealer did not notify me of the problem, I only found out cos my headlights started to look like crazy paving, now the ignition cable cover cracking makes me wonder if there is a problem but they are not saying.

I have to say as far a Triumph go they are fairly open and honest if there has been an issue.

They were fairly up front about the recall to all the Tiger Explorers at the start of the year and sounded like they fixed the issue on all the bikes as well as doing a few other bits that they didn't have to do.

I haven't seen any mention of this issue on any of the other forums so yours could just be a mistake in assembly or something.

Got to admit Triumph are good with problems, think I'm just a bit cheesed off (for want of a better word) with my local Triumph dealer, Having to wait till the lad who runs the service desk comes back off holiday in two weeks before they contact Triumph about the problem It's the third time I'v had bother with them. Well at least I can still get out on it.

Hi Gerry after seeing your post and pics, I thought I would take a look at the state of sheathing on my bike.

After close inspection I could see a scuff starting on the sheathing outer, it looks like the fork leg rubs it when using right hand lock.

I have run some insulation tape along it to prevent any damage. Also the raised up piece on the frame carrying the frame numbers etc look like they could cause some damage if the cable passes and rubs, so I have stuck some foam behind to protect the outer sheath.

Thanks for the heads up, other owners need to check this too

    Hi JACKO,
I was beginning to wondering if I was the only one with this problem, but I think its because my bike is now 3 years old and things are now starting to show up.
I have still had no joy from my local Triumph dealer, Went over on Saturday waited 15 mins at the service desk no one around apart from 2 salesmen and loads of folk looking, but when a guy parked up outside and walked to the desk one of the salesmen broke his neck to get to him, brought your bike in for a service sir, no problem just leave your keys and Il have it sorted for you, when I asked were the service guy was I was told he was test riding a customers bike and only he could sort my problem out. After 30 mins I was outside and had my bike started and was putting my crash hat on to leave when he ran round the corner with the manager. I was told he was'nt ignoring me but was busy and he would look in to it but it could take some time as Triumph were slow at getting back about problems with warranty(I told them about it 3 wks ago). I have told them I wont be booking my bike in with them for a service as they seem to be running the place on a shoe string.
It will be interesting to see if any one else has the same problems with the wiring as there bike gets older.

Can't see why they would want to replace the cables as it is only a protective sheath - the routing of these can be a little tight and its worth j j j jiggling the cables every now and then to stop this sort of thing happening. An easy fix is some sparky's heat shrink that will cover it,seal it and help in the future. I do hope you find a triumph dealer that's more helpful soon as they are getting left behind in the new model stakes and good old fashioned loyalty soon wears thin IMO... Best of luck with the repair

Thought about heat shrink but you cant get it over the connector block for the ignition and if you get the right size to clear the connector it would not shrink down to the correct size for the cables. The wires do'nt need jiggling they have plenty of free play, it's just that they bend in the same place every time the bike goes on to right lock (see photos). The thing is it's not often that it's on full right lock, only when parking, so it's not had that much wear & Tear.
The thing with my dealer is ,they want to sell you the bike but do'nt want the hassel of warranty work( does not pay well) when some thing goes wrong.
By the way it's been 4 working days since I was last over to the shop but still hav'nt had a call from them and it's now heading for 4 weeks since I first reported it

i have this problem on my bike, same model too, mine is caused by the cable rubbing on the edge where the chassis number is, its pretty tight when the bars are turned to the left, my bike has 3000 km's on it, just got it recently and noticed this, i had a similar problem with a GSXR with a cable on the steering damper, it wore through completely before i realised, not uncommon i guess,

It's not a problem of too tight, on mine the cable outer has cracked where it bends on right lock and by the in fill panel on the frame tubes.
Its got to be the material the outer sheaf is made of not being fit for purpose. (still waiting for my friendly help full dealer getting back with a reply from Triumph, that's if they ever got in touch with them to start with, and they are closed on a Monday )
