1200rr Cost To Change….

£8.500 for your 18 RS as trade in is not to bad, personally I think £18.500 for the 1200RR is a bit steep, I could think of a better machine for that sort of money, it will be interesting to see how many sell in the first 12 months.

 

Power for the course unfortunately. Dealers are in it for the money. They pay as little as they can get away with for your bike to maximise the profit on its resale and take as much as they can in profit on the new bike.

 

Well that says a lot to me, the supply will not be huge, gosh is Triumph already thinking there will not be a huge demand, they said that about the Daytona 765 Moto 2, there are a couple of new ones still around for sale, as well as a fair few very low mileage second hand ones.

 

What's the "snagging process", @Oldskool? Also, I understand your thoughts about not trading your 2018 Speed RS for the new RR. I think my 2019 Speed Triple RS is for all intents and purposes identical to your 2018 if I'm not mistaken. And I love it. There's nothing that I've seen or learned about the RR that has made me consider trading. Actually, the one thing that probably would make me NOT inclined to trade to the RR are the ergonomics of the new bike. I'm less and less inclined to be in such a crouched position these days.

 

I was once the proud owner of a 2020 Speed Triple 1050 RS and still would be if I hadn't taken it to Triumph for its second service. Rather than hang about until the service was completed I took the new Speed Triple 1200 RS out for a test ride.

Whilst the 1050 was indeed superb and more than met my motorcycling needs and wants there was just something preventing complete 100% harmony. It could have been the quickshifters occasional bang from 4th to 5th, the discomfort after an hour or so in the saddle, the footer of getting the fuel cap key from whatever pocket it was in when refuelling or some other trivial itch I could not identify nor scratch.

In any case within a mile or so on the 1200 my mind was made up, this was the bike for me. I found it far more comfortable, seemed so much more responsive, far better brakes, the engine was immense, I am aware the power / torque figures are similar up to about 7k rpm. I was smiling like I had just won the lottery. I wasn't completely sure of the dash layout nor the sticky out rear number plate limb, or the exhaust but the riding was sublime.

Within the week I had arranged to swap my 1050 and Thruxton R for the 1200 which had a few choice extras fitted: heated grips, frame and fork protectors, windscreen, scrolling indicators, tank pad and wheel nut finisher. Straight swap and I dont know, nor really care what I got for either trade in.

Yes I really really do miss the Thruxton but the Speed Triple 1200RS more than compensates.

The 1200RR was announced shortly after I had struck the deal but before I took possession of my 1200RS. I admit I was initially quite annoyed at not being told about it because IMO it looks fabulous. Or do the colours make it ? Or is it a wannabe Thruxton RS ?

However to get the RR with the extras I would have spent 2299 pounds more. In reality I would have bought a bike with a similar riding position as my Thruxton R with a small fairing and semi active suspension. Long term I prefer the seating of the RS, I could have put a similar fairing on the Thruxton but preferred the naked look and I have had my suspension professionally set up by Scot Sus in Clydebank. So really all things considered I am glad I never knew about the RR when the deal was struck and even now the RR does not feature in my thoughts.

Costs to change are a feature of motoring be it 2 wheels or 4. The dealers are not charities and some may resemble large finned fish with jaggy sharp teeth and should therefore be avoided. Unless I actually had won the lottery or come into some money 10k to change would put me off. Even 8k to change for its IMO much better sibling would put me off. Second hand , ex demo Speed Triple 1200 RS are now coming on the market for about 13500 pounds. 5k ish to change would be tempting !

 

Whens the press launch for the RR?

 

As I've gotten older I've learned riding comfort really makes the riding experience. My 1200RS replaced my MV Superveloce Oro and I really love the RS. I'm willing to spend so much more time on the bike. I would eventually regret having the RR riding position.

What weight are you and do you recall what suspension settings you ended up with? I ended going with comfort setting recommendation in owners manual and seems to work well for me. One day I should get a suspension tuner to set up all my bikes properly.
