    Hi all,

Went to start my '02 Speedy yesterday after around 2 weeks in the garage and found that the dash did nothing when the ignition was switched on. Lights, horn, signals etc all work fine but the starter does nothing.

At first I thought it was a flat battery so I left it on charge overnight, multimeter shows 13ish volts so should be OK there. All fuses intact, have checked the wiring for the ignition switch, dash etc, all seems alright.

I'm at a bit of a dead end here, bought this Triumph after owning an extremely unreliable KTM hoping it would be better, but have been a bit disappointed thus far.

    Any help or comments appreciated!

Have had this problem a couple of times with my Bonneville. All lights on, instrument sweep, fully charged battery etc but press the button and not a sound. I just kept trying (about 5 times) and it fired up and has not done it since - so I've no idea what caused it or cured it either!

Thanks for commenting. On mine the digital readouts and backlights do nothing, usually when you turn the killswitch to 'off' it turns off the dash too, but in this case it stays off regardless off what position the killswitch is in.

Could it be a loose or dirty connection somewhere or a bad earth?

Loose or dirty connection, is/was it very wet/damp during the two week lay up ? Water may have ingressed it's way into the wiring at a coupling/connector.

can you short the starter just once to see it it is working then that localises the problem to the dash and starter button and they must share some connectors. do you have a manual to see wiring diagrams the ignition connector is under the head on the right tucked in. Please do not think I know what I am saying.

Problem seemed to alleviate for a few weeks but has started again now. :( Same symptoms as before but the fix I used before is no longer working. I'm on the verge of punting this bike as spares and starting afresh - I bought it hoping it would be reliable in comparison to the time-bomb of a KTM I owned before but so far it's been just as much if not more trouble.

    Just a thought.
i have intermittent issues with my speedy too.....mine turns out to be the datatool alarm / immobiliser. wonder if you have one fitted ?

Cheers for the reply! Yes - I do have the Triumph Datatool S3 alarm fitted but I'm not sure if it has an immobiliser function. I've tried the bike with the alarm unplugged and the 'blanking plug' fitted in its place. Still no luck with it.

Tried it already. Took it apart, cleaned and reassembled and continuity is all in order. Cycling the killswitch makes a relay under the seat click but does nothing other than that.

Did you ever check out the battery fully ?

can you swap out the relay?

took mine in to dealers on saturday for an engine case replacement. work done, got on bike to come home....nothing, all lit up on dash just absolutly nothing on the turn of the key.......I do have a replacement on order through the recall but ot arrived as yet... bike was pushed back into workshop, was def the alarm, soon as it was by passed it sprung into life.
Got me home and been fine since, just no protection on the bike at the moment
certainly sounds the same issue as mine. hope you get sorted soon

If it is so easy to bypass the alarm/immobiliser just by unplugging it and fitting the blanking cap it makes me wonder what the actual point of it is. Why they don't just make it built into the ECU with a chip key is beyond belief!
