Thruxton X pipe

Ordered one to be fitted to my Thruxton ...when it comes. and that was after hearing it on You tube ( a1 moto ) along with vance and Hines American spec.

 

What's the porpoise please ?

 

I believe the x design helps the gases to flow out using a pulsing style flow......and sounds nice

 

A large fish fish with a big nose, I think?

 

The X-type crossover is used a lot on V8 motors and does sound good. Be interested to hear how it sounds on a 270° cranked twin?

 

Ive got an xk8 so i'd best buy 2 then . It sounds like a gimmick but I reserve the right to be wrong.

 

Probably true, not much gain ..if any? But it's worth it just for the sound.
As for the cost, it's still within my budget spend on extras.

 

Mixed reports over here, with some saying it really screws up their AF, and (in the words of the local Triumph mechanic who's serviced two of them) "They run like sh*t".
Now some people report their bikes seem fine (but have never dyno'd them), while other have dyno runs showing them as dangerously lean.
Personally, I'd avoid them until we have a de-cat map from Triumph. I get my sound fix from the slash-cuts, which are (to me) a perfect sound and volume level with no harshness.
I worry that these firms are simply "jumping on the bandwagon" and producing these things without consideration of the possible damage to the bikes health, and I would certainly suggest fitting a Power Commander V to make sure it's running safely.
But honestly, since they make no difference to the power, all this is for is to make it sound better... so just remove the snorkel and remove the mufflers and see what that sounds like. I made the slash-cut end-pipes to stop the swing-arm getting covered in soot, and the fact I now think it also looks far nicer than with the original cans is just an added bonus!

 

Mine are bought and fitted from A1 moto. The main Triumph dealership in York.These do not affect the warranty and if there's any issues they can sort them out.I bought my 675R from them and allowed them to make the upgrades....I was totally happy with my money well spent.......Thanks for the info though.i'm sure your home made cut off pipes sound cool good luck with your's.

 

What's causing concern over here is that Triumph's warranty terms won't cover damage caused by cat removal, as the eliminators are not authorised by Triumph Motorcycles Ltd. If it's not 'authorised' your warranty is most definitely affected, but if your local dealer is selling the eliminator then you should (hopefully) have grounds to expect them to offer their own warranty and make good any damage if any occurs. I'm pretty sure Triumph won't be replacing burned out pistons because someone made the bike run lean, even if that was a dealers. They'll just tell you to sort it out with the dealer, as they don't own the dealerships.

Hopefully this is all irrelevant, and the lean running is caused by something unrelated, but it's useful to know if you're acting as someone's guinea pig

 

Hi Jason, advice is usually free so only a fool wouldn't listen.

I've double checked the warranty cover with the purchased parts at the Triumph dealership and thier reply went along the lines of '' remember when people thought the world was flat and we would fall off the end?'' All is covered and will not affect the Triumph warranty including vance and Hines exhaust........phew!!

 

Oh, right, sorry, the V&H is an approved product though. I was only referring to the cat eliminator, which is the only thing that is likely to cause mixture issues. The cans will make absolutely no difference, and will definitely not cause issues unless you stick a potato in the end
Are you saying they did or didn't fit the eliminator?

 

I haven't collected the bike yet Jason, it's still on order. However they will be fitting and suppling all of the parts.

I actually know one of the sales team through our Ducati connections.

 

OK, well if you are getting it fitted, you should read the following:

The bits that bugger us up are clauses 2 and 5:

2. The machine must not have been subject to any modification, repair or replacement other than as authorised by Triumph Motorcycles Ltd.

5. Defects caused by the use of parts and accessories not authorised by Triumph Motorcycles Ltd are not covered by this warranty.

Clause 2 we usually ignore. That says that if the frame cracks because you replaced the bolts with chocolate biscuits, that's not their responsibility. Just don't fit stupid stuff.
Clause 5 is the one that says the cat eliminator buggers up your warranty.
Triumph Motorcycles Ltd. don't authorise replacing the cat with an eliminator, as there is currently no tune for the ECU to handle any increased flow, and the promised tune (that went with the race cams and cat-removal kit) was cancelled by Triumph a few months ago (presumably in reaction to the HD law suite in the US where HD were found guilty of selling "off road" kits knowing full well they were intended for on-road use)
If a dealer modifies a bike and you want to retain a warranty, they have to supplement the manufacturers warranty with their own. Dealers are not Triumph Motorcycles Ltd, they are independent 'garages', so they don't warranty your bike, but are paid by Triumph for any warranty work they do on behalf of Triumph.

I'm really not trying to be alarmist, but if they flipped you off when you asked about this and you want to continue having the engine covered under warranty, I would ask them very specifically "if I have issues with with lean running caused by the cat eliminator, will you guarantee any damage will be fixed under warranty?" and make sure they respond in an email or letter, because if (heaven forbid) you have an issue they are very very unlikely to cover the cost of a rebuild themselves.
