Hi! I bought a 2021 Street Twin a month ago and ride it everyday since. The bike has 33000km on the clock. I noticed a very weird and uncomfortable issue with clutch during the "first ride of the day", in the morning, when the bike is totally cold (and the weather is too, it's never exceeding 2°C outside when I start the bike). The problem is that the clutch is very jerky the very first time it engages. At the next traffic light stop, it's almost totally gone and working normally. I put some throttle (or not), and it changes nothing. It really is like if the clutch disc suddenly engages then disengage then engages again, and again. No special jerky feeling in the clutch lever. The very first and initial engagement of the clutch is impossible to get smooth, throttle or not, no mater how gentle and very slooooow I am when releasing the lever. It’s even worst with throttle because the engine is going faster so when it engages the jerk is bigger. It makes me look like a gui that never rode bikes and do not expect the bike to move, like my hole body is jerking because of this. before riding I let the bike get a bit warm, like 2 minutes engine on, time to put gloves and helmet on. Engine oil is 10W40 so it should be totally fine. Full service history in triumph official dealer, the bike has always been well looked after. Another thing and I don't know how it could be related but I mention it here, it's pretty hard to find neutral on my bike, not something I read a lot with the 900cc engine/gear box from T100 ans Street Twin. I'm rinding for 15 years now and never had this feeling in any bike. I'm used to do maintenance by myself and clutches is something I've done few times, if needed. Thanks for your thoughts and help! Also here is a picture of my beautiful bike ^^. Guillaume
@guijou I had a Bonneville similar to yours. I used t pull the clutch in for a couple of minutes before gearing and it was so much better
Hello, thanks for your answer! The thing is that it pretty much disappears after 2-3 minutes riding so I better go and get the jerkiness than pull the clutch for 2-3 minutes while not moving :/ Maybe it's a sign the clutch discs are begining to die? I'll probably talk about this to Triumph in the summer when I'll need to do the maintenance.
I have a '22 Speed Twin 1200 - exactly the same issue! Bike now has 6000 km on. First startup every time the pull away is feeling like the clutch is slipping, grabbing etc. Just for the first minute or so - thereafter it is perfect. Local dealer says this is how they are.... About the only thing I do not like about the bike! Regards!
"Normal" clutch drag due to cold oil viscosity I'd say. If the clutch is on the way out at that mileage it must have been abused in the past.
My 1st bike doing this... have 7 others in garage including a Trident 660 and none of them have this issue... But it could be... Regards
Both my Street Scramblers were pretty good in this respect but the new 1200 definitely gives more of a clunk on cold 1st gear engagement and letting it warm up for a few minutes does help. The ZZR is even worse and always has been, possibly due to the size and number of the clutch plates? My drive slopes downhill to the road so I usually roll it down in 1st with the clutch in which breaks the initial stiction of the plates. It always pulls away cleanly though.
Many years ago, one of the best go-to clutch replacements was a Barnett. So, wonder how much to replace the stock clutch with another??
Do you run the bike on semi synthetic or fully synthetic oil, it does make a difference, if fully synthetic it can and does cause the symptoms you describe.
Have 2023 t120 Bonne; full synthetic 10w50, no clutch issues - smooth engagement; however, noticed that drive chain in good adjustment (about 1 inch slack) made for more smooth engagement vs 1.5 inch slack.
Thank you all for your answers! I guess I'll now wait for the weather to be warmer, maybe spring, and I'll have a clue if it's due to the cold oil or something like that. As Triumph made the maintenance I didn't ask for a less viscous oil but maybe I'll ask next time!
