Sudden throttle and engine power loss.

    I have a 2022 Thruxton with 8,000 miles.

While riding on the highway at around 75-80 mph, I lost throttle response, the engine was still running, and the bike started slowing down. The engine light came on. This happened twice during a 7-hour ride, both times around the 5-hour mark. I pulled over, turned the bike off, then back on, and it ran fine until the second time, about 30 minutes later. Turned it off and back on. After that, the rest of the trip was fine.

I’ve been having battery issues (bought a new one but haven’t installed it yet.) For the past few weeks, the bike has sometimes struggled to start. It would try to turn over, fail, then start successfully on the second attempt. Every time this happened, the trip meter reset.

I’m unsure if the problem is with the battery or bad gas.

I always use 93 or higher octane gas when available. I added a small amount of STP fuel treatment, I normally use Lucas but they didn't have any. This was a day before the issue and filled up about 3 or 4 times after.

I also recently added throttle spacers to remove the throttle slack, which works great, but I don’t think that’s related.

About two months ago, I had a warranty issue with the clutch, and they replaced the whole part.

Anyone have any ideas what could cause this issue of sudden throttle and engine power loss?

    Thank you so much.

Well if I were you I would put the new battery on (assuming it is fully charged) seeing as you have one there.
Bad fuel could well be the issue, the stp treatment shouldn't do any harm. I don't know what octane fuel I use but I only use E5, never E10 in my T509.

Shame E5 will be phased out in 2026.

Edited to show correct information/ newspaper rumours, fuel type changed from E10 to E5.

    Did you mean E5?

EDIT - I’m confused (it doesn’t take much) I was asking a question as a ban of E10 sounds less likely than a ban of E5, but the disagree makes me think I’ve got completely the wrong end of the stick. Anyone cast any light on the situation for a numbnut like me? Thanks

Have you checked the fuel line from the tank isn’t kinked?

I had a similar problem with my Speed Twin 1200, virtually the same engine as the Thruxton. A new battery cured it, no problems since then. I use E5 petrol whenever possible, and avoid supermarket pish unless it's Tesco E5. In the UK E5 is either 97 or 99 RON, depending on which brand you buy.

Hi not sure if you resolved thus issue but on my 2020 Thruxton RS i had a similar problem when starting, engine would turn briefly not fire and reset the clock… second attempt it would fire up. Problem was the earth point, just follow the negative lead to the mounting point on the back of the engine and clean the contact. From memory 10mm socket is needed ans emery paper to scuff up the contact surface. Job done.
