rookie electrical question, on a 22 street twin, do you need to disconnect the battery to unplug and change the turn signals and would it hurt anything to leave the licence plate lite plug disconnected,

Generally i would disconnect the battery but have done many jobs without disconnection and i can't see that changing indicators would require it. The licence plate not sure of you laws but here it is a requirement to have the number plate illuminated.

If you disconnect the battery the engine management light will come on the dash, the indicator wires are insulated at the ends, so no risk of any accidental shorting out, I take it you are fitting scrolling indicators, or maybe just ones more slimline, the EMU will automatically recognise the new indicators and therefore the replacements are just plug and play.

Hey Joe, I bought the bike used and the original owner put a dart front screen, those tiny led front signals and a nrc tail lite fender delete kit, that look totally cool so I left them on for the past year, but I don't think there street legal, where I live in the states they don't inspect bikes, but if I get racked up the insurance co. might not like it so I was going to put the stock signals and fender back on but I wanted to relocate the signals and remove the giant plate holder and reflectors from the rear fender that have the plate lite on it and just leave it unplugged, and put an aftermarket plate holder on it, I guess I'll give it a try and see what happens, if I have to I can mount the lite to the new plate holder, thanks man ride safe

@Pete B See your point. Over here as long as you declare your addons and they are not speed enhancements they are accepted by most insurance companies. But as said most of what you are doing is just plug and play so really you are fine to just carry on without worries. And we are all here to help each other if needed so just keep asking.

Thanks for the info ice,I bought the bike used and it had mini aftermarket turn signals on the front along with the nrc fender delete on the back, that is a little to minimalist for me, and then I bought the motone slammer seat that's shorter then the OEM seat, so I'm relocating new rear signals and replacing the licence plate bracket, and reusing the original fender, when I took the fender apart the colored wires to the signals looked like the screws holding the plastic together were going through them, exposing some wire, also the black wires on the brake lite and signals were all connected, looked like the previous owner might have been in there, didn't look like factory wiring, are the black wires the grounds, I'm going to have to reroute and clean some of it up
