Battery Advice

    Anyone have any experience of Numax batteries? I’m considering one of these https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/354052779469 rather than going for the Yuasa YTX12-BS for my 2013 1050 Tiger SE.
    It’s cheaper, physically the same size and shown on their listings as a suitable alternative, but the main attraction is the 210 CCA it claims whereas the Yuasa is only rated as 180.

    That seems a good price for that battery, other sellers are showing nearly the same price as the Yuasa.
    I have no experience of this make but it is showing as having a years guarantee so for the price I would suggest that it is worth a shot, particularly as it has a CCA figure of 210amps

    I agree an upgrade will be beneficial as I found the Yuasa12BS on my 1050 Tiger to be lacking when it came to starting if stood for more than 2 weeks. The Yuasa 14BS on my current 1050 Speed Triple is so much better but unfortunately cannot be retro fitted as it is larger than the 12BS. No experience of Numax batteries so sorry can't offer an opinion.

    It appears that the battery fitted to my current 2019 1050 Speed Triple is a different spec (Yuasa YTZ14S) to that fitted to my previous 2011 1050 Speed Triple (Yuasa YTX14-BS). They are both 12ah batteries but the latter is smaller and also smaller than the 10ah battery fitted to my previous 2007 1050 Tiger (Yuasa YTX12-BS). Battery dimensions as follows (mm):
    YTX12-BS 150x87x130
    YTX14-BS 150x87x145
    YTZ14S 150x87x110
    Confusing but might be useful data for somebody ?

    Measure your battery space and look at the possibility of moving some of the other equipment around it then look for a battery with the highest amp/hour rating that will fit, make sure it’s a quality AGM battery.

    I did this on my Ducati and managed to fit an 18 amp/hour battery in the space. That was in 2010 and it’s still going strong albeit plugged into my Optimate 4 24/7.

    That just shows what a quality AGM battery can do and how long they can last when looked after. Makes me wonder why anyone would want to fit a SOTA lithium battery on a standard production road bike.

    Agreed, I will never fit a lithium battery on my machines. To do so you need to ensure that the electrical infrastructure on your machine is capable of coping with one and not going to chuck too many volts at the battery as they are voltage sensitive.

    A drop in replacement lithium battery should come with a built in BMS to deliver the correct charge regime from the output of a standard alternator. If it hasn't you're asking for trouble IMO.

    The Tiger struggled to start today and it was definitely plugged in correctly to the trickle charger since I last rode it. So I’ve ordered the Numax NTS12BS I showed at the start of this post. I’ll let you know how I get on with it.

    New battery arrived and has been fitted. Bike spins up a lot stronger but only time will tell if this continues. I’ll update in future for others info.

    In my albeit limited experience Yuasa have gone to s--t in the last few years. I u8sed to swear by them until I had 3 failures on two different bikes.. Tried a SHIDO lithium last year and apart from me duh! running it completely flat parked up for weeks last winter it's been fine. A lot more lively starting and no issues with the charging sytem.

    I replaced the Yuasa on my fireblade as it just wasn’t reliable (and it was only just over two years old and always kept on a trickle charger) with a Shido Lithium in Feb 2019 and it’s still performing as it did when new.

    I've used Varta's for a number of years and found them pretty reliable. I'm on the third pair in 19 years on the SUV. The pair that were on it when I bought it lasted 9 years despite being flattened to around 7v a couple of times due to a parasitic drain fault. One of the 2nd pair went bad at just over 3 years but I got a large discount on a 3rd pair because of that from a local supplier. I also have Varta's on the Z and the Husaberg, not sure what the make of the battery is on the new Scrambler. I heard some years ago that Yuasa and Varta are part of the same group, don't know if it's true or not.
