Have searched and not found close enough symptoms as I seem to be getting. Its a 2016 800xc with 50+k miles (35k by me) has run fantastically for several years (longest I have had a bike) Replaced starter and battery when I bought her (2019) with Ricks starter (massive improvement). After riding at ABR festival, bike hesitated a couple of times, got home cleaned air filter (Pipercross) and dusted off/cleaned engine. Shortly after, started to get harder to start (similar to starting an old bike without using choke) needed a small amount of throttle to start (fine once warmed up). Now wont start at all (just turns over), next was going to remove fuel line and check fuel is getting through. Any help/direction would be appreciated
Has the bike been serviced regularly and has it had the valve clearances checked? Have you looked at the spark plugs, are they coked up or wet with fuel?
@Richard Sharkey Really hard to diagnose this one. You will have to go through all the checks. Start by the Battery needs to have the heart to power the machine up. Also check the connections battery and solenoid. Check wires around the head stock and ignition. Also clutch lever and side stand. Check plugs and HT leads. Get a compression test. Come back to us here if these don't help.
Sorry its take a while, Yes regularly serviced valve clearances were checked 15k miles ago (negligible adjustments made), I have since emptied the fuel tank (will put fresh fuel in) checked the fuel pump, now removed the plugs (irdium) not perfect, so have ordered a set of standard NGK ones, stepper motor doing what it should, nice and smooth, will report back when its back together, my gut feeling is telling me it is related to cold start setting, no codes coming up and starting system is 99% good battery and Ricks starter spinning up nicely, all ideas welcome
I’ve been running them for 3 years (2nd set) but have some standard ones on the way and a can of clean fuel, will report back if any success
Right, getting nowhere, have now replaced plugs with brand new NGK standard plugs (properly gapped) and cleaned fuel tank and a gallon of fresh E5 unleaded, fully charged battery (13.2v). Turned over fine, but no firing, there was an almost (but that was 5th attempt and resorting to some throttle input), I'd normally check for a spark, but not quite so easy on the tiger (as the tank will need removing again) anyone done this?
What seemed easy on an old bike has proven more difficult on a modern bike, it appears, I have no spark, just read about the coils and testing resistance (I'm a sparky, but vehicle electrics are a mysterious art to me) Haynes manual say I should get: Primary - 0.8 to 1.2 Secondary - 11.5 to 12.0 I get the following readings Primary: Coil 1 - 1.36 Coil 2 - 1.36 Coil 3 - 1.36 Secondary: Coil 1 - 9.45 Coil 2 - 9.43 Coil 3 - 9.50 Anyone with any knowledge know if this is wildly out?
