Hi I’ve been looking into 360 degree cameras and the insta 360 X3 seems a good shout. Has anyone managed to mount one of these on the Thruxton R/RS? If so where and how? I’ve done some research and the obvious place seems to be on the triangular frame which connects onto the exhaust but fixings seems limited. I should have said I’d also like to try the invisible stick with it at the rear. Thanks
I've recently got an X2 and it's bloody great! Although I've done a handlebar conversion on my Thruxton so can mount off the bars with the selfie stick. Would def recommend getting one and then having a fiddle about where you can mount it, I got the motorcycle mounting kit.
Was so impressed with my son’s X2 when we went to Wales last year that I’m looking to buy myself an X3. As for mounting I use a suction mount which happily fits on the nacelle or the front mudguard of my Striple for my old Drift cameras. I have a video of us exploring the acoustics of the tunnels on the A55 with the X2 on a suction mount on the side fairing of my son’s machine but the upload file facility does recognise the videos on my iPad, only photos.
Will be interested in your feedback should you proceed with the X3. I’m looking at the Insta360 options myself at the moment.
I had a call from @timboo earlier today about the X3 and prices it can be had for. I’m pretty sure that he actually made the purchase whilst we were chatting as a suggestion I made led him to a coupon which save him some crinkle.
Hi I went with the X3. Got a rather good price on one from Wex for £330. Stickng with the original plan to mount on the frame where the exhaust is attached. Thus far I have purchased the following adaptors. See the images. For the tripod ball mount I needed male to male this was the only one I could find which says delivery at the beginning of April. For £10 based on reviews thought I had nothing to lose. The clamp should attach to the ball mount. Note the genuine insta 360 clamp only has a pivot which is no use on the thruxton R. I will keep posting updates as and when things arrive. I still need to suss a second fixing point for the invisible stick. PS the camera was pre owned on wex £349 @Baza kindly found me a code for £20 off on the Honey app which brought the camera down to £330.
I wonder if anyone has installed a 360 camera (or any camera) to the underside of the fairing support frame? This seems like quite a discrete place to mount a camera with the idea that the lens would be poking out from the bottom.
I’ve tried several places now on my thruxton r. Handlebar (with handlebar extension) - came loose. Rear sub frame came loose. Even with an x3 u really need 2 points to secure the camera. The best spot is probably lower subframe and use the two points designed for a pillion grab rail although something would need to be engineered. The Thruxton R doesn’t offer many ootions amd i don’t want to use adhesive. Then there is the microphones above 50mph ish I cant stop the wind noise, with any sort of muff thus far. Its probably going to have to be a winter project.
Thank you. Was thinking there are so many frame bars on the underside supporting the fairing that it could maybe work ok. But just a little tricky to not just mount to those supports--but to have it so just the lens sticks out below the fairing. Pic below so you can see what I am talking about.
We are off to Wales tomorrow on the bikes and last year one of my suction mounts fitted on the nacelle of my Striple worked fine with my Drift cameras so I now have my X4 fitted to it. As for wind reduction the X4 has a feature to achieve this for activities such as motorcycling. Not sure if the earlier cameras had this. Will let you know how I get on with it.
Enjoy your trip. Keen to hear how the mic fairs on the X4. The X3 has a wind reduction option which works ok in near windless circumstances, even when walking in a windy environment u need muffs for the darn thing.
