Picked up my 2022 850 Sport a few weeks back and love it.

However: I get a strange whining or keening noise at highway speed, usually around 60-70mph or so, coming from lower rear (I think). Since it only happens at speed, I can't do a walkaround to pinpoint exactly where it's coming from. It's a medium pitch whine, and it don't feel any extra vibrations or mechanical changes when it happens.

Important note: I test rode a brand new 2023 850 shortly before I found this gently used 2022, and it made the same noise.

Is this a known issue? Is it the Anakee tires negotiating the highway surface, or is there something else going on?

I'd edge towards tyre noise. You don't say which Anakees you have but dual sport tyres with more aggressive tread patterns can make quite a noise at speed. I get, what I'm certain is tyre hum, on my Scrambler with Metzeler Karoo tyres on. When I changed the OEM Metzeler Tourance tyres on my Street Scrambler for Pirelli Rallye STR's the noise increase was so marked I thought there was something wrong with the bike!

If a brand new one is the same then I would not be concerned.

Thanks for the feedback! The OEM tires on the 850 are Michelin Anakee Adventures- it does make sense that they could produce some extra noise, and it sounds like you had a similar reaction to your Pirellis. I'll give it a few months, and if I haven't taken the bike off road at that point (which is likely), I'll look for some halfway decent sport touring tires that offer a quieter ride.

Wouldn't worry as tyres will make a whine when running at speeds. Check your chain adjustment and alignment just to be sure. And do let us know how you get on. Also tyres of differing brands make various notes of their own

I get a whine around those speeds as well, I notice that it goes with slight inputs on the bars. Interesting to read it could be tyres, the number of times that I have cleaned the disks thinking it was them!

Just get out there mate and enjoy. Just the tyres singing as they love the ride.
