Is This The End For Sat Nav's ??

I think Sat Nav's have a fair bit of life left in them yet.
My phone stays in my pocket, unconnected to anything when I'm riding

 

You can feck right off with that shite as far as I'm concerned, got that email today too. I hate all that distracting crap in my car, last place I want it is on my bike! I use a sat nav as a tool, my bike is my entertainment and a means to escape exactly this sort of thing. Agree with @tcbandituk too, my phone stays in my pocket and not connected to anything when on the bike.

 

I use “ tank nav” ….tried and tested over many years….

I am normally using for my rides my IP-rated (waterresistant) Smartphone with an app which also provides offline navigation. It works great and is comfortable to.

 

We just look at the route beforehand, note significant points and go. If we're unsure at any point we stop and look at google maps or explore the roads around depending on whether there's an end goal, but phone stays in pocket where it belongs

 

I currently use a garmin which I connect my phone to. The satnav is connected to my cardo comms unit which is mounted on my helmet with mic and speakers.
I use the satnav for travel information and route planning. It has a music player which is very easy to set up listen to music on the ride, which is no different to what I would do when driving in the car.
And finally I can accept calls very easily on my phone if it is safe to do so on the go. I can make calls as well, but tend not to do this while on the go. However it does mean if I stop I can make a call without having to take my phone out if my pocket or take my gloves off. This I find is a really good benefit.
As far as the new Bluetooth unit goes I think it will offer an alternative to the satnav in the future, but not for a while.

 

Device free zone for me when I'm out riding, apart from a phone in my pocket for emergencies, or faffing with when I stop for a coffee. If I am going somewhere new then I will look at maps first, then Streetview for some landmarks, before implanting in my random access memory hoping that it will not be forgotten when I need it.

 

+1 for Beeline if I'm looking for a specific destination but 9 times out of 10 i leave it at home.

 

My TomTom is now mounted above the clocks on my 800 Strom. So easy to use, it's in a locked/powered cradle, waterproof, and less distracting than a phone. I'll get another one if it breaks.

 

So that's why it's called tank tape!

 

When I used to live in the north of england I used to just pick a point on the map in the yorkshire dales and aim for it armed only with an indestructible map.
Stop 2 or 3 times when I felt lost thats about it.

These sat navs take the fun out of some routes and potentially prevent you stumbling on places u never thought existed.
It was even more fun back then as a wrong turn could cause an onset of fear in case u ram out of fuel.

 

I should clarify my previous post. I like @timboo when I’m riding locally (read circa 100 radius from home), I have the satnav on my bike, but I don’t use it for navigation, I just follow the front wheel.
It comes in to its own when your in countries or area that are not known to you.

 

I ride since 1980 and the only place I am using satnav is in my car, as I spend most on my working time on the road. On my motorcycle I don't want it, I do it 'old style'. The only concession would be a Beeline but that is still far away. Guess I am a bit too oldskool for that... Every year we go to France for ten days, always the same 'system'....

I just mounted a Garmin to my T120 yesterday. My wife got it for me last Christmas, just took me a while to find time. I/we usually ride local-ish so I usually stop and check phone if needed. But I think it'll be nice to have the Garmin mounted with its nice, big, old people pictures (not that I need them ). I also didn't want to mount my phone for fear of dropping it or vibration damage. I'm hoping to use Garmin for first time later this week.

 

same as the rest of guys.. my phone in my pocket... just imagine you loose al your contacts and the unit, because the phone fell from the bike and a truck ran over it...

 

@FreddyG: This happened to me while using a smartphone for navigation on a bycicle. I lost it while riding and a following car ran over it. My luck, it was a chinese ruggedized phone and had no damage afterwards.
